Synopsis

Naval Power Struggle explores the intense maritime rivalry between Britain and France from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries, a period crucial for understanding Britain's rise to global dominance. The book argues that British naval supremacy wasn't inevitable, but rather the result of continuous investment, tactical advancements, and a bit of luck in overcoming significant French maritime challenges. It challenges the notion of easy British dominance by showcasing the genuine threats posed by the French navy and the constant adaptations required to maintain superiority. This detailed exploration of naval warfare during the Age of Revolution provides valuable insights into the dynamics of power and the importance of sea power.

The book begins by examining the state of both navies before the revolution, detailing fleet sizes and ship designs. It then analyzes the strategic objectives of each nation, such as controlling trade routes and colonial possessions, and dissects pivotal naval battles like the Battle of the Nile and Trafalgar. Drawing from extensive archival research including naval records and ship logs, this study connects naval history to economics, political science, and sociology for a holistic view.

The culmination demonstrates how British naval power directly impacted France's continental defeat and Britain's subsequent global hegemony.

Building on his enormously successful series of Philosophers in 90 Minutes, Paul Strathern now applies his witty and incisive prose to brief biographical studies of the world's great writers. He brings their lives and ideas to life in entertaining and accessible fashion.
After narrowly avoiding a firing squad when he was just twenty-eight years old, Dostoevsky never took things lightly. His great novels burst upon the European literary scene like a succession of thunderbolts. His understanding of the darker and more extreme recesses of the human mind cast a forceful light into these areas of experience. The raw psychology and passionate involvement of his books galvanized writers and thinkers as disparate as Nietzsche and Kafka.
In Dostoevsky in 90 Minutes, Paul Strathern offers a concise, expert account of Dostoevsky's life and ideas and explains their influence on literature and on man's struggle to understand his place in the world. The book also includes selections from Dostoevsky's writings and recommended reading for those who wish to delve deeper.

Albert Fish did not look like a monster. That was what people remembered after the newspapers had printed every sensationalized story, his trial had ended, and Americans were left with trying to understand who Albert Fish was. Pictures showed him with a slight frame, white hair, and mild blue eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. Those who actually knew him recalled the way he spoke to children, mixing patience, kindness, and gentleness in ways that children recognize and trust without being taught. Neighbors described him as pleasant, and landladies said he was no trouble at all. He paid his rent on time, never raised his voice, and smiled easily and often. His smile reached his eyes like genuine ones do, in a way that cannot be easily faked.
It turned out that for more than 40 years, Albert Fish had been moving through the country, leaving behind him a trail of victims that the authorities had not yet connected and would not connect for years to come. That trail, when it was finally mapped, would test the limits of what the American criminal justice system had ever been asked to confront. He was, according to the psychiatrists who examined him, the most complex case of sexual psychopathy in American history, and he engaged in behaviors so far outside normal human boundaries that many professionals found themselves lacking adequate clinical language to describe him.
The details and the actions of the Son of Sam remain shocking even decades later. Over the course of a seemingly random series of shootings that took place across New York City in 1976 and 1977, Berkowitz taunted law enforcement in highly publicized letters as he continued to elude justice, and when he referred to himself as the “son of Sam” in one of his rambling letters, his notorious nickname came to life. The senseless nature of the crimes and the erratic statements of the man claiming responsibility for them shook the Big Apple to its core as long as the killer remained at large.

Written by speaker and teacher Peter Radford, Love Teaching, Keep Teaching: The essential guide to improving wellbeing at all levels in schools is a practical guide to staying well in a high-pressure profession.
In the midst of a recruitment crisis and a massive exodus of teachers from our schools, now is the time for some joined-up thinking about teacher wellbeing and mental health.
Offering insightful advice and practical strategies, Peter invites you to think differently about the way education is ‘done’ and how you can keep doing the job you love without sacrificing your health and wellbeing.
Love Teaching, Keep Teaching paints a picture of a truly ‘healthy school’ as being one in which the value of each staff member and student is fundamental to everything we do. It also shares a fresh perspective on school leadership, encouraging leaders to rethink common practices and to explore the rewards and benefits of employing a people-focused approach.
Split into three parts, the book covers the following key aspects of improving wellbeing in schools:
    1. Teachers and leaders improving their own wellbeing.
    2. The role of teachers and leaders in improving wellbeing across schools.
    3. The challenge to change the culture of our schools and education system.
Peter challenges the current way of measuring student progress and appraising teachers, and sends a wake-up call to encourage professionals and policymakers to ‘do’ education differently in order to prevent the current exodus of teachers from the profession. Furthermore, Peter also draws upon his own experiences as a teacher struggling under the heavy workload that ultimately played a part in his subsequent breakdown – and draws key lessons from his reflections to help other educators avoid the same fate.
Suitable for teachers and school leaders in both primary and secondary settings.
