Synopsis

“Land Mines” explores the multifaceted history and impact of these weapons, examining their military utility alongside their devastating humanitarian consequences. Land mines, initially intended for territorial defense and hindering enemy advances, have become a global threat, disproportionately affecting civilian populations long after conflicts subside. The book highlights the ethical dilemmas inherent in their deployment and the ongoing international efforts, such as the Ottawa Treaty, aimed at their eradication.

The book meticulously traces the evolution of land mine technology and strategy, analyzing their use in major conflicts through detailed case studies. It addresses the immense challenges of post-conflict mine clearance and victim assistance, while also examining the debates around anti-personnel versus anti-tank mines. Readers gain a comprehensive understanding of how these weapons have shaped military history, politics, and humanitarian issues, underscored by the tragic statistics of casualties and socio-economic disruption.

Progressing chronologically, the book utilizes military archives, humanitarian reports, and legal documents to offer a nuanced perspective. It connects land mine usage to broader themes within international law, human rights, and development studies, enriching its analysis and appealing to a diverse audience.

The book culminates by assessing the future of landmine policy and the pursuit of a mine-free world, making it a valuable resource for policymakers and those interested in military strategy.

A restorative and resonant memoir of a year in the life of an aging shepherd

For 50 years, Barbara McLean has tended a flock of Border Leicester sheep on her small Ontario farm, Lambsquarters. In Shepherd’s Sight she shares the crises, pleasures, and challenges of farm life over the course of a year. Now in her 70s, McLean faces a new problem: how much longer she can continue with the physically taxing work that is her central source of meaning and satisfaction.

Through her unsentimental gaze, we witness the highs and heartbreaks of delivering and rearing lambs, the shearing and spinning of wool, the wildlife in the woods (and occasionally in the house), and the garden produce moving from seed to harvest to table. Even after half a century on this land, McLean is still making fresh observations, and she shares them in evocative, elegant prose. As she moves through the calendar year, she also reflects on years past, offering a long view on climate, stewardship, and agriculture.

With its vivid description and absorbing storytelling, Shepherd’s Sight offers an unforgettable glimpse of a life lived on the land.

Before the Vietnam War, most Americans would have been hard pressed to locate Vietnam on a map. South Vietnamese President Diem’s regime was extremely unpopular, and war broke out between Communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam around the end of the 1950s. Kennedy’s administration tried to prop up the South Vietnamese with training and assistance, but the South Vietnamese military was feeble. A month before his death, Kennedy signed a presidential directive withdrawing 1,000 American personnel, and shortly after Kennedy’s assassination, new President Lyndon B. Johnson reversed course, instead opting to expand American assistance to South Vietnam.
Over the next few years, the American military commitment to South Vietnam grew dramatically, and the war effort became both deeper and more complex. The strategy included parallel efforts to strengthen the economic and political foundations of the South Vietnamese regime, to root out the Viet Cong guerrilla insurgency in the south, combat the more conventional North Vietnamese Army (NVA) near the Demilitarized Zone between north and south, and bomb military and industrial targets in North Vietnam itself.
The United States, attempting to maintain its status as leader and defender of the non-communist world, gradually offered more and more support to South Vietnam’s leaders in Saigon, and direct military intervention became inevitable after the famous Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which also greatly influenced Operation Rolling Thunder. The actual incident consisted of a skirmish between three North Vietnamese torpedo boats, which managed to put exactly one machine-gun bullet hole in an American vessel, and a follow-up in which spooked American gunners fired at phantasmal radar image on a night of severe storm. These false images, caused by meteorological conditions, later received the sobriquet “Gulf of Tonkin ghosts.”

Chinese Poetry From Zhou to Ming...

For generations, Arthur Waley’s lyrical translations served as the primary gateway to Chinese poetry for the English-speaking world. Organized by dynasty, this edition transforms Waley's scattered masterpieces into a coherent historical journey through Chinese literature, from the ancient Zhou foundational texts to the twilight of the Tang. This structure reveals the evolving concerns of Chinese civilization, from ritual and statecraft to intimate personal reflection and profound philosophical inquiry, all through Waley’s singular poetic voice.
Waley, a self-taught scholar who never visited Asia yet won the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry, rendered classical verse into enduring English poetry, creating a bridge between scholarly precision and accessible artistry that continues to define the Western encounter with China’s poetic heritage.
From the solemn hymns of ancient courts to the wine-stained verses of Tang Dynasty taverns, this volume begins with the folk rituals and moral wisdom of the Zhou Book of Songs (Shijing) and the political elegies of the Han. A pivotal shift occurs in the Six Dynasties period, exemplified by the recluse poet T’ao Ch’ien (Tao Yuanming), whose verses on rustic solitude, farming, and wine established a paradigm of Daoist-inspired personal spirituality.
This sets the stage for the Tang dynasty, China’s poetic golden age. Here, the romantic genius of Li Po (Li Bai), the wandering Daoist immortal, dominates the High Tang period with his extravagant imagery and emotional intensity. The focus then shifts to the Mid and Late Tang, with the populist master Po Chü-i (Bai Juyi). A reformist official, Po Chü-i crafted accessible, narrative verse concerned with social reality, governance, and personal loss.
Witness the world through a lens of profound simplicity, feel the enduring human passions of solitude, friendship, loss, and delight, and discover the timeless voice of a civilization that found its purest expression in the perfect line.
