  Populism, as a political phenomenon, has seen a significant resurgence in recent decades, challenging both traditional political structures and the established norms of democratic governance. It is a term often used to describe political movements or leaders who claim to represent "the people" against a corrupt or out-of-touch elite. The central tenet of populism lies in its rhetoric, which typically divides society into two antagonistic groups: the virtuous, ordinary people and the corrupt, self-serving elite. These populist movements tap into widespread dissatisfaction with the status quo, offering simple, direct solutions to complex political and economic issues. The appeal of populism is particularly potent in times of economic instability, social division, or perceived political disillusionment, providing a voice to those who feel marginalized or neglected by traditional political parties. 
  Democracy, on the other hand, is founded on principles of inclusivity, pluralism, and the protection of rights. The democratic system is built upon checks and balances, where power is distributed across various institutions to prevent any one entity from gaining too much control. The rule of law and respect for civil liberties are central to the functioning of democratic societies. While democracy inherently embraces political diversity and disagreement, it relies on established norms and values, such as the protection of minority rights, the independence of the judiciary, and the free exchange of ideas.

  Operation Greif: The History of...

  During the Battle of the Bulge, the Allies became understandably nervous, and Hitler hoped to capitalize on German momentum with a top-secret special operation that he named Operation Greif. This mission would utilize German soldiers, trained in sabotage techniques and disguised in American and British uniforms, and have them cross Allied lines to hold strategic targets for the German advance while destroying communication lines and ammunition depots. Most importantly, they would cause chaos and confusion by misdirecting the enemy, as Hitler explained in his orders: “I want you to command a group of American and British troops and get them across the Meuse and seize one of the bridges. Not, my dear Skorzeny, real Americans or British. I want you to create special units wearing American and British uniforms. They will travel in captured Allied tanks. Think of the confusion you could cause! I envisage a whole string of false orders which will upset communications and attack morale.” 
  	The Skorzeny he was addressing was none other than Otto Skorzeny, who had become famous by the late stages of the war because of his role in rescuing Benito Mussolini via the Gran Sasso raid. One thing that characterized Skorzeny was a continuing talent for self-aggrandizement and exaggeration of his role in events, which naturally worked on someone like Hitler. In the wake of the Gran Sasso raid, Hitler awarded Skorzeny the Knight’s Cross (one of the highest German awards for valor) and promoted him to Sturmbannführer (Major). Heinrich Himmler, who personally disliked and distrusted Skorzeny, seized the opportunity to raise the profile of the SS and to suggest that the success of the Gran Sasso raid was entirely due to the SS. As a result, it would be Skorzeny who led the Waffen-SS operation that Hitler envisioned for the Battle of the Bulge.

  After resisting the German attack during the Battle of the Bulge, the Allied armies began advancing, and with that, the race to Berlin was truly on. While much has been written of the Battle of the Bulge, Okinawa, Midway, Stalingrad, and many other conflicts of the Second World War, the Battle for Berlin has remained in the shadows for many historians. Its importance in toppling Hitler cannot be denied, despite the fact that some thought its strategic value unnecessary to the war itself. The capture of the city and the red Soviet banner hanging victorious over the Reichstag is one of history’s most famous (an ominous) images. In the weeks it took for the Battle of Berlin to be fought, an American president passed away, a British Prime Minister had to make concessions he did not desire, a Russian leader fought his way into Western Europe to stay, and a German one took his own life. The battle’s implications would be felt for the next 50 years. 
  The Battle of Iwo Jima, code name “Operation Detachment,” is more of a misnomer than anything. It was fought as part of a large American invasion directed by steps toward the Japanese mainland, and it was more like a siege that lasted 36 days from February-March 1945, with non-stop fighting every minute. In fact, the iconic flag-raising photo was taken just four days into the battle, and as that picture suggests, the battle was not a pristine tactical event but an unceasing horror with no haven for protection.  
  Okinawa witnessed every conceivable horror of war both on land and at sea. American ground forces on Okinawa had to deal with bad weather (including a typhoon), anti-tank moats, barbed wire, mines, caves, underground tunnel networks, and fanatical Japanese soldiers who were willing to use human shields while fighting to the death. Allied naval forces supporting the amphibious invasion had to contend with Japan’s notorious kamikazes, suicide pilots who terrorized sailors.
