Beschreibung

Border Disputes explores the complex history of territorial conflicts in the Americas, revealing how seemingly arbitrary lines on a map have ignited centuries of discord. It examines the enduring impact of colonialism, where European powers carved up the continent with little regard for existing indigenous land claims and societal structures.

Furthermore, the book highlights how resource competition and economic interests fueled disputes between newly formed nations, influencing the establishment of modern national borders. The book systematically analyzes these conflicts across different regions, starting with the colonial era and transitioning into the post-independence period. It delves into specific areas like the US-Mexico border, the Andes, and Central America, drawing from historical treaties, diplomatic records, and cartographic analysis to illustrate shifting territorial claims.

A unique aspect of this study is its comparative approach, which uncovers similar patterns and divergent outcomes across the Americas, offering a nuanced understanding of the forces shaping the continent's geopolitical landscape. The conclusion synthesizes these regional case studies, providing insights into potential pathways for conflict resolution. By understanding the historical roots of territorial disputes, the book provides context for current geopolitical flashpoints and offers valuable perspectives on international relations, making it relevant for anyone interested in history, political science, and the ongoing controversies surrounding immigration, trade, and resource management.

Making Makers presents a comprehensive history of a seminal work of scholarship which has exerted a persistent attraction for scholars of war and strategy: Makers of Modern Strategy. It reveals the processes by which scholars conceived and devised the book, considering both successful and failed attempts to make and remake the work across the twentieth century, and illuminating its impact and legacy. It explains how and why these volumes took their particular forms, unearths the broader intellectual processes that shaped them, and reflects on the academic parameters of the study of war in the twentieth century. In presenting a complete genesis of the Makers project in the context of intellectual trends and historical contingency, this book reflects on a more complex and nuanced appraisal of the development of scholarship on war. In so doing it also offers contributions to the intellectual biographies of key figures in the history of war in the twentieth century, including Edward Mead Earle and Peter Paret. Making Makers contributes to an intellectual history of military history and contextualizes the place of history and historians in strategic and security studies. It is not only a history of the book, but a history of the networks of scholars involved in its creation, their careers, and lines of patronage, crossing international boundaries, from Europe to the USA, to Asia and Australia.

AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF LIFE IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S RICHEST NATIONS AHEAD OF THE FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP

Just 75 years ago, the Gulf nation of Qatar was a backwater, reliant on pearl diving. Today it is a gas-laden parvenu with seemingly limitless wealth and ambition. Skyscrapers, museums and futuristic football stadiums rise out of the desert and Ferraris race through the streets. But in the shadows, migrant workers toil in the heat for risible amounts.
Inside Qatar reveals how real people live in this surreal place, a land of both great opportunity and great iniquity. Ahead of Qatar's time in the limelight as host of the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup, anthropologist John McManus lifts a lid on the hidden worlds of its gilded elite, its spin doctors and thrill seekers, its manual labourers and domestic workers.

The sum of their tales is not some exotic cabinet of curiosities. Instead, Inside Qatar opens a window onto the global problems - of unfettered capitalism, growing inequality and climate change - that concern us all.

    Dividing Lines - How...

    Deborah N. Archer

Our nation's transportation system is crumbling. But as acclaimed scholar and ACLU president Deborah Archer warns in Dividing Lines, before we can think about rebuilding and repairing, we must consider the role race has played in transportation infrastructure, from the early twentieth century and into the present day.

As Archer demonstrates, the success of the Civil Rights movement and the fall of Jim Crow in the 1960s did not mean the end of segregation. With state-sanctioned racism no longer legal, officials across the country turned to transportation infrastructure to keep Americans divided. A wealthy white neighborhood could no longer be "protected" by racial covenants and segregated shops, but a multilane road, with no pedestrian crossings, could be built along its border to make it difficult for people from a lower-income community to visit. Highways could not be routed through Black neighborhoods based on the race of their residents, but those neighborhoods' lower property values—a legacy of racial exclusion—could justify their destruction.

Drawing on a wealth of sources, including interviews with people who now live in the shadow of highways and other major infrastructure projects, Archer presents a sweeping, national account—from Atlanta and Houston to Indianapolis and New York City—of our persistent divisions.
