Beschreibung

Bicycle Cities explores how urban areas can thrive by prioritizing cycling through strategic urban planning. It argues that transitioning to bicycle-centric urban planning involves a comprehensive shift in urban design, policy, and culture, not just installing bike lanes. The book highlights intriguing facts, such as how bicycle infrastructure can boost local retail sales and property values while reducing carbon emissions. It also emphasizes the importance of protected bike lanes, dedicated bicycle highways, and secure bicycle parking facilities. The book takes a holistic approach, integrating practical guidance with theoretical insights, and examines successful case studies like Copenhagen and Amsterdam to demonstrate the benefits of bicycle urbanism. By providing data-driven analyses of bicycle ridership and cost-benefit evaluations, the book offers a roadmap for cities seeking to become bike-friendly. It begins by introducing bicycle urbanism and progresses through analyzing successful cities, focusing on practical infrastructure design, and exploring the economic, health, and environmental impacts of cycling. The book's unique value lies in its synthesis of practical guidance with theoretical insights, making it an invaluable resource for urban planners, policymakers, and cycling advocates seeking to create more sustainable and livable cities. Aligned with the genres of Politics, Architecture General, Architecture, the book also uses visual elements like maps and photographs to showcase innovative bicycle infrastructure design.

One of the very first books to offer feminist insights and critiques of business to the practicing manager, business student, and non-academic, this provocative volume offers a fresh, positive vision that makes feminist thought accessible and relevant. Feminism: A Key Idea for Business and Society boldly challenges assumptions about both feminism and business. This provocative book:-- Offers a primer on feminism for business and explains feminist interventions including adding women's voices, pushing for equality, and practicing feminist values to make businesses more successful and more just. -- Analyzes the obstacles organizations and individuals face in their efforts to address gender inequality. -- Illustrates how feminist interventions have changed the terms of business conversations around topics such as defining work, centering the economy around care, how jobs work and wages are gendered, violence in the workplace, horizontal and peer-to-peer organizational structures that don't depend on dominance, enlightened leadership models, and power. Feminism has already had a profound impact on business, with many of its key tenets incorporated into business thinking.  With the insights revealed in this book, we can see how applying feminist perspectives to business can liberate our understanding of work and management.

Going Low - How Profane Politics...

Liberalism puts its trust in civil discourse and rational argument. Today, its opponents enthusiastically flout these norms, making a show of defying so-called political correctness. In the Trump era and beyond, right-wing figures delight in sheer offensiveness. What is at stake in breaking the rules of civility to "own the libs"?

Going Low examines how the offensive style of contemporary politics challenges liberal democratic institutions. Considering the rise of illiberal politics and debates about the limits of free speech, Finbarr Curtis draws on the insights of religious studies to rethink provocation and transgression. He argues that the spectacle of brazenly violating taboos is a show of dominance over a supposedly censorious liberalism. Profaning liberal pieties is the ultimate form of "winning." Curtis contends that deliberate offensiveness dovetails with the privatization of public goods: both represent the refusal to accommodate the sensibilities of others in a diverse society.

A major new history of North and South Korea, from the late nineteenth century to the present day

Korea has a long, riveting history—it is also a divided nation. South Korea is a vibrant democracy, the tenth largest economy, and is home to a world-renowned culture. North Korea is ruled by the most authoritarian regime in the world, a poor country in a rich region, and is best known for the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family. But both Koreas share a unique common history.

Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo draw on decades of research to explore the history of modern Korea, from the late nineteenth century, Japanese occupation, and Cold War division to the present day. A small country caught amongst the world's largest powers—including China, Japan, Russia, and the United States—Korea's fate has been closely connected to its geography and the strength of its leadership and society. This comprehensive history sheds light on the evolving identities of the two Koreas, explaining the sharp differences between North and South, and prospects for unification.
