Synopsis

"Accidental Comedy" explores the surprising role of unintentional humor in shaping history and politics. From political blunders to courtroom mishaps, the book examines how these moments can alter perceptions and influence outcomes. It highlights how even carefully constructed narratives can be undermined by the absurd. For instance, a politician's gaffe can reveal vulnerabilities, while a humorous exchange in court can challenge the intended control. The book delves into the dynamics of accidental humor in political discourse and legal settings, demonstrating the instability of formal systems. It argues that unintentional comedy offers a valuable lens for examining power dynamics and the fallibility of institutions. By analyzing archival records of political speeches and transcripts of legal proceedings, the book reveals the human element often overlooked in formal systems. The book begins by introducing a theoretical framework, then explores case studies of political gaffes and courtroom mishaps. It concludes by synthesizing these observations into a broader argument about the role of unintended humor in shaping historical and political narratives. This unique approach moves beyond recounting funny stories to reveal the underlying dynamics and broader consequences of accidental comedy.

What is the cost of an education?
Is education an additive process or a reductive one?
How does one weigh the benefits of tradition against the threat of being at odds with the future?
How does one refuse the offer of a better life for their children?
What if the offer is compulsory?
What happens when the tree of knowledge bares rotten fruit?
While the history of Canada's Residential School program is only just beginning
to be unearthed, there are already enough first hand accounts to begin asking
some of these questions. The words of the individuals included in this book
offer just a glimpse of the results of the effort of one group of people to
educate people who were in many cases not seeking the knowledge being
offered. These are tales of lessons learned, languages lost, traditions
    replaced, & charity corrupted.

Fake News: Falsehood, fabrication and fantasy in journalism examines the causes and consequences of the ‘fake news’ phenomenon now sweeping the world’s media and political debates. Drawing on three decades of research and writing on journalism and news media, the author engages with the fake news phenomenon in accessible, insightful language designed to bring clarity and context to a complex and fast-moving debate.

The author presents fake news not as a cultural issue in isolation but rather as arising from, and contributing to, significant political and social trends in twenty-first century societies. Chapters identify the factors which have laid the groundwork for fake news’ explosive appearance at this moment in our globalised public sphere. These include the rise of relativism and the crisis of objectivity, the role of digital media platforms in the production and consumption of news, and the growing drive to produce online content which attracts users and generates revenue.

We all wonder whether planet Earth has been visited by aliens. Millions of people around the planet have seen them. But very few people can see what is happening on our moon. It is in fact a perfect place for aliens to use as a base for visiting us. Especially because the dark side of the moon cannot be observed by us.

Could it be that our secretive governments know about them? Has NASA come into contact with them? The fact is astronauts from several countries claim to have seen UFO’s on or near the moon. Even NASA astronauts have claimed in public that there was and is a government cover up.

So what is the truth? Are there aliens on the moon?

Attention is not just receptive, but actively creative of the world we inhabit. How we attend makes all the difference to the world we experience. And nowadays in the West we generally attend in a rather unusual way: governed by the narrowly focussed, target-driven left hemisphere of the brain.
Forget everything you thought you knew about the difference between the hemispheres, because it will be largely wrong. It is not what each hemisphere does – they are both involved in everything – but how it does it, that matters. And the prime difference between the brain hemispheres is the manner in which they attend. For reasons of survival we need one hemisphere (in humans and many animals, the left) to pay narrow attention to detail, to grab hold of things we need, while the other, the right, keeps an eye out for everything else. The result is that one hemisphere is good at utilising the world, the other better at understanding it.
Absent, present, detached, engaged, alienated, empathic, broad or narrow, sustained or piecemeal, attention has the power to alter whatever it meets. The play of attention can both create and destroy, but it never leaves its object unchanged. How you attend to something – or don’t attend to it – matters a very great deal. This book helps you to see what it is you may have been trained by our very unusual culture not to see.
Ways of Attending is expertly read by Mike Fraser. The cover design has been adapted from a Cajal original drawing, and used with permission of Legado Cajal (Madrid).
