Synopsis

The same again, the old bell says — the roofs, the pillowed heads, the dreams, the tides — the same but not the same, this winter morning here. In his beautifully conceived, meticulously assembled new collection, Michael Coady, laureate of the home place, ruminates on and records the traces left by our lives. From the rhapsody of now' through words of love and grief, / the earth's embrace, its constancy. Going by Water celebrates enduring values and the mysterious triumphs of ordinary experience and everyday ritual. It recounts inherited as well as overheard and re-imagined stories. It ranges from the river traditions of his native town to take in a new Ireland and the newfound locales of Paris and beyond with their communities of the living and dead. While it sounds elegiac notes it pulses to the beat of music as a portal to transcendence. Symphonic in its orchestration, integrating poetry, prose narratives and the author's photography, Going by Water elicits from its catchment a universal human measure. With All Souls and One Another it forms a trilogy unique in our literature.

Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's My Favorite Wife starring Laurence Olivier & Rosalind Russell.

    Thin Black Road
    There’s a thin black road
    I have traveled many times.
    It leads to peace
    In so many ways.
It’s kind of hard to describe
    For the road’s oft unclear.
    It unfolds to me
    Like a lovely gift
    One word at a time.
Then, music fills in the gaps,
    Making worries fade away,
    As unexplainable peace pours in.
    There’s a thin black road
    It leads me to peace.
When good or ill tidings come
    To threaten my equilibrium,
    I will travel that road
    And return to peaceful calm.

This drama about LBJ’s 1960s War on Poverty “shines a bright, clear light on a pivotal moment in American history” (Charles Isherwood, The New York Times). The tumultuous beginning of Lyndon Johnson’s presidency that Robert Schenkkan presented in the multiple Tony-winning All the Way continues in part two, The Great Society, which had its world premiere at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in July 2014, directed by Bill Rauch and starring Jack Willis. In the years from 1965 to 1968, President Lyndon Johnson struggles to fight a “war on poverty” even as his war in Vietnam spins out of control. Besieged by political opponents, Johnson marshals all his political wiles to try to pass some of the most important social programs in U.S. history, while the country descends into chaos over the war and backlash against civil rights. In the tradition of the great multi-part Shakespearian historical plays, The Great Society is an unflinching examination of the morality of power. “A taut political thriller…Schenkkan’s writing shines…a vital study for all those who wish to learn from the past in order to gain some idea of what we might do in the present.”?Austin American-Statesman

Oils is a gorgeous, beguiling collection of poems where the poise of the delivery belies the emotional, existential turmoil within.
Through his portraits of an atheist, a pickpocket and a spinach-loving sailor (among others), Stephen Sexton evokes a strange kind of melancholy as he strives to reconcile passion with detachment and profound self-doubt with unwavering love.
