A complete quilting course for beginners, in 12 easy stages

A Beginner's Guide to Quilting is the perfect introduction to this popular craft. Beginning with the 'Getting Started' section, quilting teacher Michael Caputo will show the tools and equipment, and demonstrate the sewing skills you will need, plus the basics of constructing your quilt. Section two is a series of 12 workshops, each introducing you to new skills, with a project at the end which enables you to practise what you have just learned. You'll learn about joining pre-cut squares, sashing, piecing and paper piecing, using templates, and the different types of appliqué. All through the workshops there are helpful hints on choosing colours and patterns, and there are illustrations of variations on the basic blocks to show how those choices will affect the end result. With step-by-step text and clear illustrations, you'll soon be making a table runner and cushion covers, before moving on to wall hangings, a cot quilt and a throw. The final project is a full-size bed quilt with elaborate stitching to really show off all your new skills.

By turns tender, incendiary, and seriously funny, this book is a call to arms for fellow progressives with little real understanding of "the great beery, NASCAR-loving, church-going, gun-owning America that has never set foot in a Starbucks."

Deer Hunting with Jesus is Joe Bageant's report on what he learned when he moved back to his hometown of Winchester, Virginia. Like countless American small towns, it is fast becoming the bedrock of a permanent underclass. Two in five of the people in his old neighborhood do not have high school diplomas or health care. Alcohol, overeating, and Jesus are the preferred avenues of escape.

The origins of Ancient Egypt trace back to a time when the Nile River served as the lifeline for scattered communities that gradually developed into one of the world’s first great civilizations. The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BCE marked a turning point, traditionally credited to King Narmer (also known as Menes). This consolidation of power not only brought political unity but also forged a shared identity among the people along the Nile, creating the foundation for the dynastic rule that would follow for centuries.
Geography played a central role in shaping early Egyptian civilization. The Nile River, flowing from south to north, provided a reliable source of water and fertile soil through its annual inundation. These floods deposited nutrient-rich silt on the riverbanks, enabling agriculture to flourish in an otherwise arid environment. Settlements grew along the river, connected by the waterway, which also served as a route for trade and communication. Natural barriers such as deserts and the Mediterranean Sea offered protection from external invasions, allowing Egyptian culture to evolve with limited outside interference in its formative years.
The Early Dynastic Period (c. 3100–2686 BCE) saw the establishment of the first centralized state under pharaonic rule. Kings were not merely political leaders but were also regarded as divine beings, intermediaries between the gods and the people. This belief in divine kingship helped maintain stability and order in a society where religion permeated all aspects of life. Temples, tombs, and other ceremonial structures began to emerge during this era, laying the groundwork for the grand architectural achievements of later periods.

Ancient Egyptian civilization was deeply intertwined with religion, and at the heart of their belief system was a vast pantheon of gods and goddesses. These deities were more than just figures of worship; they shaped every aspect of daily life, from the rising of the sun to the passage into the afterlife. Unlike many modern religions, Egyptian theology was fluid, allowing gods to merge, evolve, or take on different roles depending on the time and region. This dynamic belief system gave rise to a rich mythology that endured for thousands of years.
The gods of Egypt were not distant, abstract beings but rather personal and deeply involved in the world. They governed nature, oversaw justice, protected the people, and maintained cosmic balance, known as *ma’at*. The concept of *ma’at* was central to Egyptian religion, representing order, harmony, and truth. It was the gods' duty to uphold *ma’at* against chaos, often personified by Set, the god of disorder and storms. This cosmic struggle played out in myths, particularly in the tales of Osiris, Isis, and Horus, which symbolized the eternal battle between good and evil, life and death.
Temples were the primary centers of worship, serving as both religious and political institutions. Each major city had its patron deity, and grand temples were built to honor and house these gods. Priests conducted daily rituals, offering food, incense, and prayers to ensure divine favor. Unlike in many other religions, common Egyptians were not allowed direct access to the inner sanctums of temples, where the gods' statues resided. Instead, they worshipped through prayers, festivals, and personal altars in their homes.
