Synopsis

In "May Fair," Michael Arlen crafts a vivid portrayal of the intricate social dynamics within London's upper echelons in the early 20th century. Rich in detail and adorned with Arlen's signature lyrical prose, this novel captures the essence of a society on the cusp of transformation, deftly weaving themes of love, aspiration, and the inevitable clash between tradition and modernity. Set against the backdrop of the prestigious May Fair, the narrative intertwines multiple perspectives, offering a kaleidoscopic view of its characters' desires and anxieties, while exploring the significance of place in their societal aspirations. Michael Arlen, an influential figure in the evolution of modernist literature, drew inspiration from his own experiences as an immigrant navigating the complexities of identity and social class. His upbringing in a prominent Armenian family amidst the cultural contrasts of England provided him with a unique lens through which to examine the societal structures of his time. Arlen's previous works showcased his keen observations of human behavior, which culminate in the richly textured tapestry of "May Fair." For readers interested in a profound exploration of social stratification and personal ambition, "May Fair" serves as a compelling examination of human relationships against the backdrop of an ever-evolving societal landscape. This novel is highly recommended for those who appreciate finely crafted narratives and the rich historical context of early 20th-century literature.

As a child being read to was one of the greatest joys imaginable. A loved one would start a tale whilst you were all cosy warm in bed with the lights nodding off. Anything could happen but sleep would come and dreams would start and all was good with the world. Adults too long for reassurance, for comfort, for calm. Sometimes they may get that. But with classic authors such as Oscar Wilde, O Henry, Saki, Rabindranath Tagore and many others they may not. Expect the unexpected.

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. EDUCATION THAT EDUCATES: Perhaps I am safe in saying that during the last ten days you have not given much systematic effort to book study in the usual sense. When interruptions come such as we have just had, taking you away from your regular routine work and study, and the preparation of routine lessons is interrupted, the first thought to some may be that this time is lost, in so far as it relates to education in the ordinary sense; that it is so much time taken away from that part of one's life that should be devoted to acquiring education.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

"A man's character is forged in the silence of the forest and the heat of his first battle."

Before he was the "Pathfinder" or "Hawkeye," he was simply Deerslayer—a young man who had never raised a rifle against a human being. On the shores of the crystal-clear Lake Glimmerglass, Natty Bumppo joins his Mohican brother Chingachgook on a perilous mission to rescue a kidnapped maiden. But the wilderness is fraught with danger: the ruthless Thomas Hutter defends his floating "Muskrat Castle" against Huron war parties, and Natty must navigate a world where the line between "civilized" and "savage" is blurred. This is the story of how a hunter became a warrior and a legend was born.

The Education of a Frontiersman: The Deerslayer is a profound meditation on honor and the "white man's gifts" versus "red man's gifts." We witness Natty's first lethal encounter—a pivotal moment of psychological transition—where he earns his first warrior name from a dying foe. It is a masterpiece of moral complexity disguised as a high-stakes adventure.

A World in Conflict: The novel captures the breathtaking beauty of the pre-Revolutionary American landscape while exposing the brutal realities of colonial expansion. Through the characters of the beautiful Judith Hutter and the simple-minded Hetty, Cooper explores themes of vanity, faith, and the tragic consequences of frontier violence.

The Foundation of an Epic: This is where the greatest friendship in American literature begins. The bond between Natty and Chingachgook is established here in its purest form—a partnership built on mutual respect, shared danger, and an unbreakable code of the woods.

Experience the dawn of the frontier. Purchase "The Deerslayer" today and walk the path of the legend.
