Synopsis

Madame Bovary is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word").

Long established as one of the greatest novels ever written, the book has often been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. Henry James writes: "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment." Giorgio de Chirico said that in his opinion "from the narrative point of view, the most perfect book is Madame Bovary by Flaubert".

'Yes, I know genius when I meet it. I may not like it—but I recognize it.'

First published in 1930 under the pseudonym 'Mary Westmacott', Giant's Bread shows a young Agatha Christie establishing herself as one of the finest writers of her day.

Emotionally charged and a novel which sweeps generations, Giant's Bread tells a tale of genius, obsession and unruly ambition. Following the life and career of Vernon Deyre – an extraordinary and brilliant musician – from childhood to fame, Christie explores love, betrayal and the sacrifices demanded by art itself. Set against the backdrop of a vividly drawn interwar Europe, Vernon learns that, despite his talents, there is a high price to pay for writing the masterpiece of his life. A crucial decision needs to be made before he risks losing it all… but what is the right path? Atmospheric and profoundly human, Giant's Bread reveals a side to Christie far removed from her murder mysteries – but remains nonetheless as thrilling.
Agatha Christie (1890 – 1976) was an English author. She was a prolific writer, most famous for her detective novels and short story collections which centred around the iconic characters of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Renowned as the 'Queen of Crime', she remains the bestselling novelist of all time, with her sales only second to the Bible.
