Synopsis

4. THE FATEFUL DATE - FABEL RETIEF SERIES

Far in the desolate wilderness of South West Africa, near the notorious ‘Seekus van die Dood’, stands a forgotten mansion, Abendruhe. The ghostly legends surrounding the place are an irresistible lure for Fabel Retief, a restless former detective with an unquenchable thirst for adventure.

His simple search for a good story, however, quickly degenerates into a struggle for survival. The house is not deserted. Within the dilapidated walls, he discovers the enigmatic Professor Ludwig Dittmar and his exquisitely beautiful, yet clearly oppressed wife, Irma. Dittmar is a man with a dark secret, and he shrinks from nothing and no one to protect it. Fabel’s curiosity plunges him into a perilous game of cat and mouse. He uncovers evidence of an ominous conspiracy, a secret sea chart, notes on old naval affairs and a forgotten shipwreck with a deadly cargo.

Trapped in this web of betrayal, with merciless henchmen on his trail, Fabel must not only fight for his own life but also to reveal the truth behind Dittmar’s sinister activities. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking down to an ominous date, 16 April. A day circled on a calendar with fear and anticipation. Who is the mysterious figure expected on this fateful day, and will Fabel survive long enough to find out?

"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924) is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and one of the 12 stories collected as The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
Sir James Damery comes to see Holmes and Watson about his illustrious client's problem (the client's identity is never revealed to the reader, although Watson finds out at the end of the story; it is heavily implied to be King Edward VII). General de Merville's young daughter Violet has fallen in love with the roguish and sadistic Austrian Baron Adelbert Gruner, who Damery and Holmes are convinced is a shameless philanderer and a murderer. The victim was his last wife, of whose murder he was acquitted owing to a legal technicality and a witness's untimely death. She met her end in the Splügen Pass. Holmes also finds out that the Baron has expensive tastes and is a collector and a recognised authority on Chinese pottery.
