Synopsis

Data Security Basics positions cybersecurity as a business survival skill in an age where data breaches cost millions, blending technical rigor with practical governance insights. The book’s core theme revolves around three pillars—encryption as a digital lockbox, access controls to minimize insider threats, and regulatory compliance frameworks like GDPR and ISO 27001. It uniquely frames compliance as a strategic advantage, not just legal obligation, while dissecting how evolving threats (ransomware, state-sponsored attacks) exploit modern interconnected systems. A standout insight reveals that 80% of breaches stem from human error, challenging readers to balance technical tools like firewalls with cultural shifts in security awareness.

Structured for clarity, the guide progresses from foundational concepts to actionable strategies, using real-world breaches like Equifax and Target to illustrate cascading failures from unpatched software or third-party risks. Case studies and checklists bridge theory and practice, offering templates for gap analyses or phishing response plans. Unlike niche technical manuals, it emphasizes interdisciplinary connections—linking encryption debates to corporate law or user psychology—to argue that data security requires collaboration across departments. The book’s accessible tone demystifies standards through analogies, avoiding jargon while stressing layered defenses that integrate technology, policy, and behavior. By prioritizing ethical, pragmatic solutions over theoretical ideals, it equips professionals to build resilience in a landscape where digital trust is non-negotiable.

    Just Culture - Restoring Trust...

A just culture is a culture of trust, learning and accountability. It is particularly important when an incident has occurred; when something has gone wrong. How do you respond to the people involved? What do you do to minimize the negative impact, and maximize learning?
This third edition of Sidney Dekkera (TM)s extremely successful Just Culture offers new material on restorative justice and ideas about why your people may be breaking rules. Supported by extensive case material, you will learn about safety reporting and honest disclosure, about retributive just culture and about the criminalization of human error.
Some suspect a just culture means letting people off the hook. Yet they believe they need to remain able to hold people accountable for undesirable performance. In this new edition, Dekker asks you to look at 'accountability' in different ways. One is by asking which rule was broken, who did it, whether that behavior crossed some line, and what the appropriate consequences should be. In this retributive sense, an 'account' is something you get people to pay, or settle. But who will draw that line? And is the process fair?
Another way to approach accountability after an incident is to ask who was hurt. To ask what their needs are. And to explore whose obligation it is to meet those needs. People involved in causing the incident may well want to participate in meeting those needs. In this restorative sense, an 'account' is something you get people to tell, and others to listen to.
Learn to look at accountability in different ways and your impact on restoring trust, learning and a sense of humanity in your organization could be enormous.

A searing analysis of health and illness under capitalism from hosts of the hit podcast Death Panel

Written by cohosts of the hit Death Panel podcast and longtime disability justice and healthcare activists Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie, Health Communism first examines how capital has instrumentalized health, disability, madness, and illness to create a class seen as "surplus," regarded as a fiscal and social burden. Demarcating the healthy from the surplus, the worker from the "unfit" to work, the authors argue, serves not only to undermine solidarity but to mark whole populations for extraction by the industries that have emerged to manage and contain this "surplus" population. Health Communism then looks to the grave threat capital poses to global public health, and at the rare movements around the world that have successfully challenged the extractive economy of health.

Ultimately, Adler-Bolton and Vierkant argue, we will not succeed in defeating capitalism until we sever health from capital. To do this will require a radical new politics of solidarity that centers the surplus, built on an understanding that we must not base the value of human life on one's willingness or ability to be productive within the current political economy. Capital, it turns out, only fears health.
