Beschreibung

'Community Building' offers a comprehensive exploration of how strong social connections form the backbone of resilient societies, particularly relevant in our digitally-dominated era. The book presents an evidence-based framework built on three core pillars: shared purpose, sustained interaction, and mutual trust, demonstrating how these elements work together to transform disconnected individuals into thriving, supportive communities.

Through a blend of historical analysis and contemporary case studies, the text illuminates successful community-building strategies that have adapted to evolving social landscapes while maintaining their essential connecting functions. The book progresses thoughtfully through three main sections, beginning with an examination of community evolution from traditional to modern hybrid forms. It then delves into practical frameworks for development, including specific communication strategies and leadership approaches, before concluding with detailed implementation guides for various contexts.

What sets this work apart is its interdisciplinary approach, connecting community building to public health outcomes and economic development while addressing current debates about technology's role in fostering genuine connections. Drawing from sociology, psychology, and urban planning, the book provides both theoretical understanding and actionable tools for community leaders, social workers, and engaged citizens.

The text's balanced examination of controversial topics, such as integrating diverse populations and managing the privacy-engagement balance, makes it an invaluable resource for anyone committed to building meaningful connections in today's complex social landscape.

In Los Angeles's most underserved communities, Lori Weise is known as the Dog Lady, the woman who's spent decades caring for people in poverty and the animals that love them. Long before anyone else, Weise grasped that animal and human suffering are inextricably connected and created a new rescue narrative, an enduring safety net empowering pet owners and providing resources to reduce the number of pets coming into shelters.

Rethinking Rescue: Dog Lady and the Story of America's Forgotten People and Pets unites the causes of animal welfare and social justice, moving between Weise's story and that of the US rescue movement: from the dog's twentieth-century transition from property to family to the rise of the no kill campaign to stop shelter euthanasia and the contradictions that hampered those efforts. Through captivating storytelling and investigative reporting, Carol Mithers examines the consequences of bias within this overwhelmingly white movement, where an overemphasis on placing animals in affluent homes often disregards pet owners in poverty. Weise's innovative and ultimately triumphant efforts revealed a better way.

Rethinking Rescue boldly confronts two of the biggest challenges of our time—poverty and homelessness—in asking the very humane question, Who deserves the love of a pet?

Peter Singer is often described as the world's most influential philosopher. He is also one of its most controversial. The author of important books such as Animal Liberation and Practical Ethics, he helped launch the animal rights and effective altruism movements and contributed to the development of bioethics. Now, in Ethics in the Real World, Singer shows that he is also a master at dissecting important current events in a few hundred words.

In this book of brief essays, he applies his controversial ways of thinking to issues like climate change, extreme poverty, animals, abortion, euthanasia, human genetic selection, sports doping, the sale of kidneys, the ethics of high-priced art, and ways of increasing happiness. Singer asks whether chimpanzees are people, smoking should be outlawed, or consensual sex between adult siblings should be decriminalized, and he reiterates his case against the idea that all human life is sacred, applying his arguments to some recent cases in the news. In addition, he explores, in an easily accessible form, some of the deepest philosophical questions, such as whether anything really matters and what is the value of the pale blue dot that is our planet.

The 1918 Influenza Pandemic moved worldwide in three waves, infecting up to 500 million people and causing over 40 million deaths. Several things tended to be present in areas that ended the pandemic with lower mortality rates than average. These include low rates of poverty, widespread access to healthcare, well-funded and general public health measures, and well-managed record keeping. Areas that ended the pandemic with high mortality rates tended to lack the above – they had high rates of poverty, limited access to healthcare, public health measures were unfunded or ineffective, and recordkeeping and communication were unreliable or unclear. It is essential to learn from the success and mistakes of nations passed so that we as a planet are better prepared for any pandemics that should arise in the future. Preparing involves high vaccination rates, fighting drug-resistant pathogens, and working to lower global poverty.

The Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, subsequent war in Eastern Ukraine, and economic sanctions imposed by the West transformed European politics. The conflict did not escalate to the levels originally feared but nor was either side able to bring it to a definitive conclusion. Ukraine suffered a loss of territory but was not forced into changing its policies away from the Westward course adopted as a result of the EuroMaidan uprising of February 2014. President Putin was left supporting a separatist enclave as Russia's economy suffered significant damage.

Ukraine and the Art of Strategy provides an account of the origins and course of the Russia-Ukraine conflict through the lens of strategy. Lawrence Freedman describes the development of President Putin's anxieties that former Soviet countries were being drawn towards the European Union, the effective pressure he put on President Yanokvych of Ukraine to turn away from the EU, and the resulting "EuroMaidan Revolution" which led to Yanukovych fleeing. He explores the reluctance of Putin to use Russian forces to do more that consolidate the insurgency in Eastern Ukraine, the failure of the Minsk peace process, and the limits of the international response. Putin's strategic-making is kept in view at all times, including his use of "information warfare" and attempts to influence the American election.

For eighty-two years the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which in 1918 became the Royal Air Force (RAF), maintained a permanent military aviation presence in the Far East. The first RFC units arrived in India in 1915. RAF India grew substantially in the interwar period and throughout World War Two. Various changes in the command structure finally saw the creation of the Far East Air Force (FEAF) in June 1949, covering South East Asia and Hong Kong. In the 1960s the UK government decided to withdraw all forces East of Suez and on October 31, 1971, the FEAF disbanded and most UK forces withdrew from Singapore at this time. The last RAF unit to leave the region was 28 Squadron flying. They had been operating Whirlwind and Wessex helicopters in Hong Kong until the territory was handed back to China in 1997. RAF Boys in the Far East illustrates what it was like for those air and ground crew who were there by telling their stories in their own words, supported by explanation of the situations at the time primarily drawn from veterans' own collections. Today those veterans who look back on their time served in the FEAF do so with a great deal of pride, and rightly so. This is their story.
