Summary

In recent years, the publishing market has undergone a quiet revolution, driven by self-publishing . The advent of digital platforms such as Amazon Kindle Direct Amazon Publishing (KDP) has allowed independent authors to become their own publishers, breaking down traditional publishing barriers. Among the various options offered by Amazon , KDP Select stands out as a promising, but also controversial, opportunity for those seeking visibility and readership.KDP Select is an optional program within KDP that allows authors to enroll their eBooks in an exclusive program with Amazon . In exchange for this exclusivity, Amazon offers a number of benefits that can potentially increase the visibility and sales of your book. But like any strategic decision, choosing to participate in KDP Select requires careful consideration of the pros and cons.In this chapter, we'll explore the concept of KDP Select , how it came about, what it offers, and why it's become a popular choice among indie authors. We'll also begin to understand the impacts of this choice on an author's career. The Origin and Evolution of KDP SelectWhen Amazon launched KDP, the idea was simple: to allow anyone to publish and sell their digital book without having to go through a traditional publisher. This democratized publishing, giving a voice to millions of writers around the world. However, as the number of books published grew exponentially, competition became fierce. That's when Amazon introduced KDP Select .KDP Select was conceived as a way to highlight certain books in Amazon 's vast catalog , providing a competitive advantage for those who opted for exclusivity. For decades, it was believed that the first major accident at a nuclear power plant took place at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, which took nearly 15 years and $1 billion to fully clean up after that disaster. However, Three Mile Island paled in comparison to Chernobyl, which to this day remains the most notorious nuclear accident in history. Located in the Ukraine, the Chernobyl power plant was undergoing experiments in the early morning hours of April 26, 1986 when it suffered a series of explosions in one of its nuclear reactors, killing over 30 people at the plant and spread radioactive fallout across a wide swath of the Soviet Union. Although the Soviets would try to cover up just how disastrous the accident at Chernobyl was, it was impossible to hide the full extent of the damage given that radioactive material was affecting Western Europe as well. All told, the accident caused an estimated $18 billion in damages, forced the evacuation of everybody nearby, and continues to produce adverse health effects that are still being felt in the region.
The disasters emphatically demonstrated the dangers of nuclear power plants, and it brought about new regulations across the world in an effort to make the use of nuclear energy safer. Meanwhile, scientists and scholars are still studying the effects of the radiation on people exposed to the disasters and continue to come up with estimates of just how deadly they were.
As it turned out, however, Chernobyl was not the first major nuclear disaster that the Soviets tried to hide. In 1957, a nuclear disaster occurred in an area near the Ural Mountains, far to the east of Moscow and to the north of the border with Kazakhstan, and to this day, it is a disaster few have heard of, even though it was the world’s worst nuclear disaster until Chernobyl. For those aware of it, it is now known as the Kyshtym disaster.

Every writer has a secret monster: Writer’s Block.
Some writers have driven this monster into a corner where it lurks, the great unmentioned unmentionable waiting to pounce. Others chant the mantra “Writer’s Block Doesn’t Exist” in the vain hopes that daily repetition can avoid it. Still others thwart it with superstitious behavior—new notebooks and pens for new projects, story idea spinners to select common tropes, and an in-depth notebook that becomes thicker and thicker until the dam bursts and overwhelms the hulking monster.
Yet something more than simple disruptions and distractions interfere with our writing, creating insurmountable walls that close around us until the monster in the labyrinth takes hold and shakes us into submission.
M.A. Lee and The Write Focus podcast analyze the three broad categories of Writer’s Block and offer solutions to overcome this looming monster. After this examination is a survey of the advice of several successful writers. Finally, a series of chapters delves into the monster-defeating techniques used by giants such as Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Stewart, and Phyllis A. Whitney.
They defeated writer’s block, and so can we.

Runner-up for the Hugo Best Related Book Award (2003)The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction is a lively account of the role of women and feminism in the development of American science fiction during its formative years, the mid-20th century. Beginning in 1926, with the publication of the first issue of Amazing Stories, Justine Larbalestier examines science fiction's engagement with questions of femininity, masculinity, sex and sexuality. She traces the debates over the place of women and feminism in science fiction as it emerged in stories, letters and articles in science fiction magazines and fanzines. The book culminates in the story of James Tiptree, Jr. and the eponymous Award. Tiptree was a successful science fiction writer of the 1970s who was later discovered to be a woman. Tiptree's easy acceptance by the male-dominated publishing arena of the time proved that there was no necessary difference in the way men and women wrote, but that there was a real difference in the way they were read.
