Sinossi

When Durfee rode up the valley, he found that the country fitted his mind as a glove fits the hand—the sort of glove that he preferred to wear—a little lighter in the leather and more delicate in the make than most of the buckskin gloves that a cowboy will buy.
He liked the look of things, because that look was clean. He saw the gleam of water, here and there; water that looked as though it might be running even in the dry middle of September, after a rainless season. And there were plenty of hills for variety, and yet it was a range that a man could gallop over. Three men, on this sort of a lay, could do the work that sometimes took the riding of ten in worse regions. And then the grass grew thick and short on the ground, the sort of grass that is sweetest on a cow's tooth, that lays the fat round and hard along her backbone, to say nothing of horses. It was a good limestone country, too. He could see the white ribs and elbows of the stone punching through the sides of the hills. And where limestone shows, it will be in the water, and the limestone water makes bone, and bone is the first necessity in the scheme of things, if you want to build a horse.

In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce spins a gripping tale of psychological tension and the brutal realities of war. Set during the American Civil War, the story follows Peyton Farquhar, a Southern plantation owner who is sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to sabotage a Union railroad bridge. As Farquhar faces his imminent demise, Bierce masterfully plays with the boundaries of time and perception, drawing readers into a haunting exploration of life, death, and the mind's final moments.
Bierce's stark portrayal of human suffering, the futility of war, and the illusory nature of time makes this story a striking commentary on the fragility of human existence. Through its sudden twist ending, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge remains one of Bierce's most iconic works, a brilliant reflection on the contrast between hope and despair.

1595, Bishopsgate Ward, London. Matthew Cutler, constable for the parish of Spitalfields, prides himself on always being on the side of justice. So when a young man on the run, whose only ‘crime’ was protesting about high prices and corruption, hides out in Bishopsgate, not for the first time Cutler finds his duties as constable at odds with his gut feeling. He feels compelled to help him, and not just because his daughter Jane is smitten with the plucky lad…
Meanwhile there is trouble in Bishopsgate as fake coins keep turning up, convincing enough to fool many. Missing twin sisters. A chilling revelation. Will this be the case that breaks the Cold Case Squad?
Twenty years earlier, a set of female eighteen-year-old twins went missing in the Bay Area. There were no news reports or national coverage. The original investigators had barely touched the case, and like so many other cases of missing teens, were quickly labeled runaways, and the file sat on the shelf. Baffled by the lack of attention for the sisters, Martina insists it will be Hirsch and the Cold Case Squad’s next case.
Undeterred by the lack of prior research, the team dives into the case, employing methods of investigation and forensic technology not available twenty years earlier. This could be the case where time is actually on their side. When the team catches their first big break, the discovery of one sister’s remains and a lead on the second, they shift the case from missing persons to homicide.
With the news, Martina and Hirsch dig deeper into the women’s lives before they disappeared. With a no-stone-unturned approach and DNA results back from the lab, they soon find a shocking connection to one of their own. Concerned the information could jeopardize getting justice for the victims’ family, Martina and Hirsch now must work in the shadows in order to find answers to what happened all those years ago.
Will Martina and Hirsch be able to expose the truth without endangering themselves, their jobs, and the future of the Cold Case Squad?
How She Fell is the 7th installment of the twisty, fast-paced Martina Monroe crime thriller series.
