Beschreibung

In "The Story of Malta," Maturin M. Ballou crafts a vivid narrative that explores the rich history and cultural tapestry of the Maltese archipelago. With an engaging literary style that balances descriptive prose and historical analysis, Ballou delves into Malta's strategic significance in the Mediterranean, tracing its journey from ancient civilizations through the Knights of St. John to British colonial rule. The book thoughtfully contextualizes Malta's tumultuous history against broader European events, shedding light on the island's unique identity and enduring resilience amidst adversity. Maturin M. Ballou was a prolific American writer, travel journalist, and historian known for his extensive travels and keen observations. His firsthand experiences in Malta, coupled with his scholarly interests in maritime history and cultures, deeply informed this work. As a contemporary of 19th-century explorations, Ballou sought to bring forth the voices of lesser-known regions, revealing their stories through well-researched narratives that resonate with both antiquarians and casual readers. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in historical geography, Mediterranean studies, or the evolution of cultural identities. Ballou's thoughtful insights and compelling storytelling render "The Story of Malta" both an informative resource and an immersive read that invites readers to cherish the unique heritage of this enchanting island.

    Nevertheless - Machiavelli Pascal

Nevertheless comprises essays on Machiavelli and on Pascal. The ambivalent connection between the two parts is embodied by the comma (,) in the subtitle: Machiavelli, Pascal. Is this comma a conjunction or a disjunction?

In fact, both. Ginzburg approaches Machiavelli's work from the perspective of casuistry, or case-based ethical reasoning. For as Machiavelli indicated through his repeated use of the adverb nondimanco ("nevertheless"), there is an exception to every rule. Such a perspective may seem to echo the traditional image of Machiavelli as a cynical, "Machiavellian" thinker. But a close analysis of Machiavelli the reader, as well as of the ways in which some of Machiavelli's most perceptive readers read his work, throws a different light on Machiavelli the writer. The same hermeneutic strategy inspires the essays on the Provinciales, Pascal's ferocious attack against Jesuitical casuistry.

Casuistry vs anti-casuistry; Machiavelli's secular attitude towards religion vs Pascal's deep religiosity. We are confronted, apparently, with two completely different worlds. But Pascal read Machiavelli, and reflected deeply upon his work. A belated, contemporary echo of this reading can unveil the complex relationship between Machiavelli and Pascal—their divergences as well as their unexpected convergences.

Sometimes poor weather and a rough season can lead to a duck depression, but one good afternoon can turn it all around. The relationships built during these hunting and fishing adventures can make up for even the worst of days - a broken boat, the loss of a beloved dog and more.

Historian, journalist, educator, and civil rights advocate W. E. B. Du Bois was perhaps most accomplished as a sociologist of race relations and of the black community in the United States. This volume collects his most important sociological writings from 1898 to 1910. The eighteen selections include five on Du Bois's conception of sociology and sociological research, especially as a tool in the struggle for racial justice; excerpts from studies of black communities in the South and the North, including The Philadelphia Negro; writings on black culture and social life, with a selection from The Negro American Family; and later works on race relations in the United States and elsewhere after World War II. This section includes a powerful fiftieth-anniversary reassessment of his classic 1901 article in the Atlantic in which he predicted that "the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line." The editors provide an annotated bibliography, a lengthy overview of Du Bois's life and work, and detailed introductions to the selections. "The most significant contribution of this book is its inclusive look at Du Bois as both academic and activist. . . . Individuals interested in the study of social issues and political sociology would benefit from reading and discussing this book."—Paul Kriese, Sociology: Reviews of New Books "Green and Driver, informing this volume with a 48-page essay that summarizes Du Bois' career and places him in the context of the profession, have intelligently organized his writings. . . . A welcome contribution that should have wide use."—Elliott Rudwick, Contemporary Sociology
