Beschreibung

Prison psychologist Eva Ross has dealt with her share of sinners. The corrupt, the insane; their minds were hers to unlock. But when those around her start to show the same characteristics, she is forced to turn to a stranger for help.

Together with the mysterious Madden Scott, Eva enters a new reality. As the world around her shifts, secrets barely hidden under the surface are revealed.

In an adventure that takes them through nightmares and across continents, Eva and Madden enter the shadowy world of Anges de la Resurrection des Chevaliers: the last barrier between earth and what lies beneath.

Isobel Violet Hunt was born on 28th September 1862 in Durham. As a young child her family moved to London and Hunt was brought up amongst the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists.

As a writer she was comfortable and talented enough to write across several forms including short stories, novels, memoir, and biography. Her novels are excellent examples of New Woman fiction and help illustrate her activities fighting for and promoting better rights for women.

Although she remained unmarried she had lovers as notable as Somerset Maugham, H G Wells and Ford Maddox Ford, the latter whom she lived with for a number of years.

Her collections of supernatural short stories contain much of her best work and despite her considerable talents and literary output her reputation rests both on the literary salons she held at her home in Campden Hill, where the very best of literary society attended, and for her founding of the Women Writers' Suffrage League in 1908 and her participation in the founding of International PEN in 1921.

Violet Hunt died of pneumonia at her home in Campden Hill on 16th January 1942. She was 79 and is buried at Brookwood Cemetery.

A widowed writer begins to work on a biography of a novelist and artist—and soon uncovers bizarre parallels between her life and her subject's—in this chilling and singularly strange novella by a contemporary master of horror and fantasy.

The narrator of Lisa Tuttle's uncanny novella is a recent widow, a writer adrift. Not only has she lost her husband, but her muse seems to have deserted her altogether. Her agent summons her to Edinburgh to discuss her next book. What will she tell him? At once the answer comes to her: she will write the biography of Helen Ralston, best known, if at all, as the subject of W.E. Logan's much-reproduced painting Circe, and the inspiration for his classic children's book, Hermine in Cloud-Land.

But Ralston was a novelist and artist in her own right, though her writing is no longer in print and her most radical painting, My Death, deemed too unsettling—malevolent even—to be shown in public. Over the months that follow, Ralston proves an astonishingly cooperative subject, even as her biographer uncovers eerie resonances between the older woman's history and her own. Whose biography is she writing—really?

At first, the sound was subtle. A low, almost imperceptible tapping just on the edge of hearing, and yet, from the moment I heard it, the sound conjured that phrase: ‘The patter of tiny feet.’I had always hated that expression, ‘the patter of tiny feet.’ Even as a child, the words had sent a chill through me. I knew, of course, what they were supposed to mean, the joy of offspring, the sound of children in some other room or just out of view, playing merrily and creating said patter with their mischievous stumbling back and forth. In that context, it was a lovely phrase. An idiom that made others think of proud mothers seated downstairs as infants somewhere on the landing above giggled and ran between rooms. But that was for others...
