Sinossi

Teacher Training offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of teacher education, transitioning from apprenticeship models to today's sophisticated certification systems. It emphasizes that effective teaching isn't static, but has transformed into a profession grounded in research and pedagogical theory.

The book uniquely highlights the historical context, revealing how past assumptions influence current teaching practices and providing a framework for evaluating different educational approaches. For instance, the shift from informal training to university-based programs reflects changing societal views on education's role.

The book challenges the notion of a single "best" teacher preparation method, instead advocating for adaptable, research-informed models. It begins by establishing a historical foundation, then analyzes educational policy impacts, examines research-backed teaching methods, and concludes with future directions for teacher preparation.

A key focus is culturally responsive teaching, exploring how programs can better prepare teachers for diverse student populations. This makes the book valuable to teacher education students, school administrators, and policymakers seeking improvements in teacher training and high-quality classroom instruction.

Munich is widely reviled today and is held up as the epitome of appeasement, but historians still debate its effects on the Second World War, as well as Neville Chamberlain's character and motivations. Some believe the attempted appeasement of Nazi Germany hastened, or even caused, the mayhem occupying the next seven years. Others believe that the pact merely failed to alter war's inevitable arrival in either direction. Historians and authors alternately interpret Chamberlain as a bumbling, arrogant fool, a strong-willed statesman who simply miscalculated the nature of Hitler and Nazi Germany, or even a man with dictatorial ambitions surreptitiously inserting himself into the Fuhrer's orbit and prevented from further damaging democracy only by his fall and death from bowel cancer. Another possible interpretation, with considerable documentary support, asserts Chamberlain wished to enlist Germany's aid against the state most Europeans perceived as the true threat of the era, the Soviet Union.
Europe’s attempts to appease him, most notably at Munich in 1938, failed, as Nazi Germany swallowed up Austria and Czechoslovakia by 1939. Italy was on the march as well, invading Albania in April of 1939. The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1 of that year. Two days later, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany, and World War II had begun in earnest. Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940.

"A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom" by Andrew Dickson White is a seminal two-volume work that delves into the prolonged struggle between science and religious orthodoxy throughout Western history. White, co-founder and first president of Cornell University, provides a comprehensive account of how religious dogma frequently stood in opposition to scientific advancements, from the age of Galileo to Darwinian evolution. He posits that this clash hindered intellectual progress and societal development, but also acknowledges the instances where religion fostered the growth of scientific understanding. Through detailed historical analysis, White underscores the necessity of maintaining a clear separation between theological beliefs and empirical investigation for the unhindered progress of knowledge.

How can we use information rather than be subjected to it? Does life have a digital logic? Is the internal structure of the universe made up of information? Is the Internet generating a collective brain?
Ever since Homo sapiens, armed with his electronic machines, learned to unlock the secret of information and its alchemy by digitizing it, he has unleashed hyperinformation. This force is a subtle blend of matter and thought, animate and inanimate, virtual and real. For the first time in human history, technology seems to be generating a collective intelligence. Does this mean that reason is becoming truly alien to itself, potentially hostile and dangerous? Or are we witnessing the happy dawn of a new era?
Homo sapiens 2.0 offers a journey into the mysteries of the human brain, the mysteries of genes and memes (their mental equivalent), and the secrets of language, religion and new technologies. From René Girard to Richard Dawkins, from Teilhard de Chardin to Joël de Rosnay, the author recounts the saga of thought in the age of the virtual. In-between each chapter, “Interludes” take us on a journey through literary works or enlightening scientific experiments.

While some may argue that the detective story is an example of cheap, dispensable popular fiction, G. K. Chesterton begs to differ. He is, after all, the author of the Father Brown mysteries! Where else but in detective novels do we appreciate the romance of the city?
