Synopsis

"Smithsonian Legacy" explores the remarkable story of the Smithsonian Institution, tracing its evolution from a nascent idea fueled by the Smithson bequest to a global leader in research, education, and cultural preservation. The book examines how this institution, born from an Englishman's vision, navigated early struggles and controversies to significantly shape scientific knowledge and cultural understanding in America. From its pivotal role in advancing fields like natural history and anthropology to its enduring impact on American society, the book delves into the Smithsonian's complex history and its ongoing adaptation to modern challenges, revealing its unique position as a dynamic force in shaping public understanding.

The book is structured chronologically and thematically, beginning with the establishment of the Smithsonian in the mid-19th century and concluding with an examination of the challenges it faces in the 21st century. Early chapters explore the interpretation of James Smithson's will and the debates surrounding the institution's mission. Later chapters examine the growth of the Smithsonian's museums and research centers, its increasing involvement in national and international affairs, and its engagement with diverse audiences. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the book offers fresh perspectives on the Smithsonian's historical trajectory, examining its internal dynamics, its relationships with other institutions, and its impact on society at large. It highlights the institution's ability to adapt to changing societal needs and scientific advancements while staying true to Smithson’s original vision, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of science, culture, and philanthropy.

  • The Thinkers - The Rise of Partisan Think Tanks and the Polarization of American Politics - cover

The Thinkers - The Rise of...

    E.J. Fagan

Increasingly, political parties have adopted not only different policies, but different sets of facts. As E. J. Fagan argues, partisan think tanks have helped create these alternate realities in their capacity as de facto formal party organizations. Through the analyses generated by aligned think tanks, political elites on both the left and right frequently offer radically different assessments of a policy's consequences.

In The Thinkers, Fagan tells the story of how partisan think tanks displaced non-partisan experts to become the closest policy advisors to the Republican and Democratic Parties. He explores their history, how they influence policymakers, and how their influence impacts the polarization of American politics. More broadly, Fagan shows that the rise of partisan think tanks tracks closely with the increase in political polarization since the 1970s. Because they are funded and staffed by strong ideologues, partisan think tanks seek to move their party's preferences to the left or right of center. When they are successful, parties take more extreme positions than if they had only drawn information from non-partisan sources, which increases polarization. A powerful account of the impact of partisan think tanks on American democracy, The Thinkers will reshape our understanding of the fundamental drivers of the US's polarized political system.

The fascinating, scandalous, and true story of Viola MacMillan and the Windfall mining scandal

Viola MacMillan had it all: success, money, and respect. Influence, even. But in 1964, after three decades in the mining industry, one of the most fascinating women in Canadian business history was the central character in one of the country’s most famous stock scandals.

MacMillan, who started out as a prospector in the ’30s, had developed lucrative mines and put together big deals. But she still wanted “a major discovery.” Early in July 1964, shares in Windfall Oil and Mines, a company she and her husband controlled, traded for around 56 cents. Then one day, the stock took off. In the absence of any information from the company about what it had found near Timmins on its claims, rumors and greed pushed the share price to a high of $5.70. MacMillan stayed quiet. Finally, after three weeks, Windfall admitted it had nothing.

So many small investors lost money when the stock crashed that the Ontario government appointed a royal commission to examine what had happened, which led to changes at the Ontario Securities Commission and the Toronto Stock Exchange. Although MacMillan spent a few weeks in prison, she later received a pardon and the Order of Canada.

The story of a young, Black Communist Party organizer wrongly convicted of attempting to incite insurrection and the landmark case that made him a civil rights hero.

Decades before the impeachment of an American president for a similar offense, Angelo Herndon was charged under Georgia law with "attempting to incite insurrection"—a crime punishable by death. In 1932, the eighteen-year-old Black Communist Party organizer was arrested and had his room illegally searched and his radical literature seized. Charged under an old slave insurrection statute, Herndon was convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to eighteen to twenty years on a chain gang.

A legal odyssey of Herndon's narrow escape from certain death because of his unpopular political beliefs, You Can't Kill a Man Because of the Books He Reads explores Herndon's journey from Alabama coal miner to Communist Party organizer to Harlem hero and beyond. Brad Snyder tells the stories of the diverse coalition of people who rallied to his cause and who twice appealed his case to the US Supreme Court. They forced the Court to recognize free speech and peaceable assembly as essential rights in a democracy—a landmark decision in 1930s America as well as today.
