Beschreibung

Education in Prisons explores the transformative potential of education within correctional facilities, arguing it's a key to rehabilitation and reduced recidivism. The book analyzes how prison education programs, ranging from GED preparation to vocational training, equip incarcerated individuals with essential cognitive and social skills needed for successful reentry. A core insight is that investing in education can drastically reduce repeat offenses, improving public safety and fostering economic growth.

The book examines the historical context of prison education, its evolution, and the diverse range of educational programs currently available. It presents empirical evidence, including statistical data and case studies, to demonstrate the effectiveness of these programs on recidivism rates and employment outcomes. By drawing on criminology, sociology, and economics, Education in Prisons offers a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Structured to provide a thorough overview, the book begins with the history of prison education, explores program types, assesses their effectiveness, and concludes with policy recommendations. This approach highlights the importance of viewing prison education not just as a supplementary program but as a fundamental component of effective correctional strategies and criminal justice reform.

Lisa Bachman’s son, Justin, was sick, suffering, and broken. Lisa and her husband, Ron, had no idea how to heal, help, or fix him. His third suicide attempt, by the time he was eleven years old, was their final wake-up call. Although he survived, their family was left without a roadmap. They would start down a path through a maze, hit a wall, turn around, and begin again. Thankfully, with help, they found their way. Not only did they get through extraordinarily difficult times with a suicidal son, but he went on to start a nationwide nonprofit organization and become a motivational speaker who led more that 150 full-school assemblies for students in grades five through twelve in sixteen states—all before he turned eighteen.Mental health problems and the subsequent intolerance and isolation are some of the most prevalent, yet least discussed issues facing parents and kids today. Children and teens are over schedule, overstimulated, and dealing with challenges and questions that adults could never have imagined. Add in undiagnosed issues, willful ignorance, limited resources, refusal of the school to provide resources and abandonment from those believed to be a support system, and readers will get a glimpse of the obstacles the Bachman family had to overcome to navigate the first twelve years of their son’s life. “I wrote The Book We Wish We Had to share our triumphs but even more so, to share our struggles. By revealing our vulnerabilities and missteps, my hope is that readers will relate and become better able to understand that their experiences and feelings are normal as they find their way out of their maze.” Says Bachman, a mother of three grown children. The Book We Wish We Had addresses issues head-on with raw realism, humor, and hope as Bachman tells the story of how her family navigated their son Justin’s suicide attempts, medical, and mental illness. More than a memoir, this book is a resource that speaks truth to the pain that is so difficult to voice

An eye-opening exploration of the medical origins of gender in modern US history.

Today, a world without “gender” is hard to imagine. Gender is at the center of contentious political and social debates, shapes policy decisions, and informs our everyday lives. Its formulation, however, is lesser known: Gender was first used in clinical practice. This book tells the story of the invention of gender in American medicine, detailing how it was shaped by mid-twentieth-century American notions of culture, personality, and social engineering.

Sandra Eder shows how the concept of gender transformed from a pragmatic tool in the sex assignment of children with intersex traits in the 1950s to an essential category in clinics for transgender individuals in the 1960s. Following gender outside the clinic, she reconstructs the variable ways feminists integrated gender into their theories and practices in the 1970s. The process by which ideas about gender became medicalized, enforced, and popularized was messy, and the route by which gender came to be understood and applied through the treatment of patients with intersex traits was fraught and contested. In historicizing the emergence of the sex/gender binary, Eder reveals the role of medical practice in developing a transformative idea and the interdependence between practice and wider social norms that inform the attitudes of physicians and researchers. She shows that ideas like gender can take on a life of their own and may be used to question the normative perceptions they were based on. Illuminating and deeply researched, the book closes a notable gap in the history of gender and will inspire current debates on the relationship between social norms and medical practice.

Stop spinning your wheels, reconnect with your genius, and shift your most precious resource—your energy—to what matters most
“A practical, compassionate guide for high achievers ready to work smarter, not harder.” —Nedra Glover Tawwab, New York Times bestselling author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace
Many of us misdirect our energy. We do too much, but we feel like it’s not enough. We feel burned out and uninspired, but simply telling us to rest doesn’t help. Clinical psychologist Dr. Diana Hill offers hope through Wise Effort—a method that helps bring your greatest gifts in alignment with your deepest values to reclaim your energy and recharge your relationships, health, work, and community.
Dr. Hill invites us to get curious, especially about our “genius energy”—our unique and inherent strengths that show up in our talents and gifts. Our genius energy can propel us forward, but surprisingly it can also be the thing that holds us back, like the super-helper who supports everyone else but doesn’t help themself, or the high achiever at work whose patterns backfire in relationships. The book helps you identify your specific areas of genius and explore how they’re both helping and hurting you. Dr. Hill also helps you pinpoint your core values. Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, neuroscience, and contemplative practice, Wise Effort:
    • Helps you identify your unique geniuses and focus them wisely• Offers practices, assessments, and wisdom-building questions to open up your energy blocks• Shares a fresh perspective for anyone who has been told they “care too much”• Applies the Wise Effort Method to relationships, heath, work, creativity, and community
With the Wise Effort Method, the genius at the root of your problems becomes your solution to feeling connected, brave, and authentic. As Hill writes, “Wise effort is about feeling alive; being engaged; asking bigger questions; and making decisions from your body, head, and heart. It’s about getting to know who you are and contributing what you have to offer the world with passion and generosity. And it will change your life.”
