Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857) is one of the earliest autobiographies of a mixed-race woman. In her autobiography, Seacole records her bloodline thus: "I am a Creole, and have good Scots blood coursing through my veins. My father was a soldier of an old Scottish family." Legally, she was classified as a mulatto, a multiracial person with limited political rights. Seacole emphasises her personal vigour in her autobiography, distancing herself from the contemporary stereotype of the "lazy Creole", She was proud of her black ancestry, writing, "I have a few shades of deeper brown upon my skin which shows me related – and I am proud of the relationship – to those poor mortals whom you once held enslaved, and whose bodies America still owns." She also became widely known and respected, particularly among the European military visitors to Jamaica who often stayed at Blundell Hall. She treated patients in the cholera epidemic of 1850, which killed some 32,000 Jamaicans. However, the erection of a statue of her at St Thomas' Hospital, London, on 30 June 2016, describing her as a "pioneer nurse", has generated controversy and opposition from supporters of Florence Nightingale. Earlier controversy broke out in the United Kingdom late in 2012 over reports of a proposal to add her to the UK's National Curriculum. This book is not for musicians or African drumming enthusiasts - it is for all humans! It is a collage of my experiences learning, playing, and teaching djembe, a goblet-shaped West African drum. It is not chronological, but it is thematic, focusing on various aspects of my life, including my trips to Guinea in West Africa and other places around the world to learn and share djembe, “Africanesque” folktales I have written, and hopefully, a few kernels of wisdom about music and life that will help you on your own journey. Journal entries and folktales are sprinkled throughout and are not always related to the chapter itself but add additional insight into my experiences. My interest in djembe—a West African drum—is also an interest in people, culture, communication, and the meaning of life. That may sound overly philosophical, but I hope you’ll see what I mean by the time you finish reading this book.
Here are a few facts about me that may be helpful to know before we continue. My full name is Michael Taylor, but I prefer to be called “Taylor.” I am biracial and adopted, with a black father and white mother, which means much of my early life was spent trying to understand why I didn’t fit in. I think djembe found me to bring me home to part of my ethnic lineage as well as to my purpose in this lifetime. Learning djembe, for me, has been a search for identity, awareness, and connection. Perhaps you are attracted to music, art, certain foods, literature, or something else for similar reasons. I hope this book contains universal truths that will resonate with your own experiences. If nothing else, playing djembe all over the world has taught me that while we all have unique gifts and different experiences, we have far more in common. Some of us may march to the beat of a different drum, but we all have something beautiful and unique to add to the rhythm.

I was there, yes I was there. What I was to experience growing up in the suburbs of Leeds at the time the book suggests, was that of hardship, laughter, fun, love and betrayal, juvenile violence and the explosion of alternatives that were now becoming accepted, as inevitable. 
But also what I was experiencing, with the doctrine of Victorian values to keep me out of harm's way, was the freedom, without concern, to wander and explore for endless hours, the labyrinth of streets of back to back terrace houses that offered adventure around every corner. 
The simplicity of life during the time of my teenage years, alongside a commonality of certain basic traditions passed down from generation to generation, that still apply and work regardless of generation. This was liberating, allowing me to develop my mind and character through trial and error at a pace of life that was less demanding and frenzied to what is to arrive in the next century, when all this description will be viewed in the format akin to a Sepia painting hanging with obscurity in a corner of a gallery. 
This story had a need to be told.
