Beschreibung

A missing person sets off the action in this classic whodunit from the bestselling mystery writer known as the American Agatha Christie.   In The Window at the White Cat, bumbling lawyer Jack Knox agrees to help a beautiful young woman find her missing father. But when the politician is found dead at a backstreet social club serving up beers and illegal favors, and Jack’s aunt disappears, it looks like the daughter’s fiancé may be guilty of more than winning her heart.   A #1 New York Times–bestselling author with ten million books in print, Mary Roberts Rinehart crafted a career out of writing mysteries that set the stage for generations of writers to come.   “[Rinehart’s] literary distinction lies in the combination of love, humor and murder that she wove into her tales. . . . She helped the mystery story grow up.”—The New York Times

"The Adventure of the Dancing Men", a Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle published as The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1905. Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" third in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help. The other is "The Five Orange Pips", part of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The original title was "The Dancing Men," when it was published as a short story in The Strand Magazine in December 1903.
The story begins when Hilton Cubitt of Ridling Thorpe Manor in Norfolk visits Sherlock Holmes and gives him a piece of paper with the following mysterious sequence of stick figures. - Cubitt explains to Holmes and Dr. Watson that he has recently married an American woman named Elsie Patrick. Before the wedding, she had asked her husband-to-be never to ask about her past, as she had had some "very disagreeable associations" in her life, although she said that there was nothing that she was personally ashamed of. Their marriage had been a happy one until the messages began to arrive, first mailed from the United States and then appearing in the garden.

That’s the trouble with anarchists: big ideas, shoddy staff work.
Harry Delamere doesn’t know much about opera, but he’s fairly sure people aren’t supposed to get murdered for real at the climax. In this excerpt from his memoirs - published as the Gentleman Adventurer series - he finds himself kidnapped, blown up, suspected of murder, forced to listen to Winston Churchill, kidnapped again - oh, and again - enjoying a terrifying encounter with modern technology and making a most ungentlemanly display of his legs while tackling the threat of world revolution.
A thrilling clash between the genteel arts and the new-fangled flying machines! Two of the most notorious incidents in the history of British radicalism! Shocks, scandals, anarchist outrages, sinister secret policemen, foreign beauties, pioneer pilots, domestic beauties, and a most distressing episode during the interval at the Alhambra.
‘Ye Gods’, said Winston Churchill; ‘Harry Delamere… It must be worse than we feared.’
