Synopsis

In 'The Collected Works of Mary Roberts Rinehart,' readers are treated to a rich tapestry of early 20th-century literature that deftly blends mystery, humor, and social commentary. Rinehart's narrative style is characterized by its directness and wit, often employing an innovative approach to suspense that foreshadows modern crime fiction. Her stories, originally serialized in magazines, reflect the zeitgeist of her era, tackling themes of gender roles, social stratification, and the complexities of human relationships. The collection not only showcases her skillful storytelling but also offers insight into the shifting cultural landscapes of post-Victorian America. Mary Roberts Rinehart, often dubbed the "American Agatha Christie," was a prolific author whose life experiences deeply influenced her work. Rinehart grew up in a rapidly changing society and was a keen observer of social norms, which inspired her to create strong, multifaceted female characters who navigate the challenges of their time. Her background as a trained nurse during World War I provided her with unique perspectives that permeated her narratives, imbuing them with realism and emotional depth. This anthology is a must-read for scholars and enthusiasts of early 20th-century literature, as it not only preserves Rinehart's enchanting storytelling but also serves as a critical lens through which to explore the evolution of the mystery genre. Readers seeking to understand the cultural implications of her work will find rich rewards in this collection, which stands as an essential contribution to the literary canon.

Dan Flood, Olivia Jones and their two young children are a family at breaking point. The mundane juggle of parenting and work means that the romance is draining away. Living in a community that is growing ever more fearful, just adds to the pressure in their lives.

"The Stockbroker's Clerk" is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is the fourth of the twelve collected in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in most British editions of the canon, and third of eleven in most American ones (owing to the omission of the "scandalous" "Adventure of the Cardboard Box"). The story was first published in Strand Magazine in March 1893 and featured seven illustrations by Sidney Paget.
A young clerk, Hall Pycroft, consults Holmes with his suspicions concerning a company that has offered him a very well-paid job. Holmes, Watson and Pycroft travel by train to Birmingham, where the job is initially to be based, and Pycroft explains that he was recently made redundant from a stockbroking house. He eventually secured a new post with another group of stockbrokers, Mawson and Williams, in Lombard Street in the City. Before taking up the job, he was approached by Arthur Pinner, who offered him a managership with a newly established hardware distribution company, to be based in France.
