Synopsis

Mary Cholmondeley was born at Hodnet near Market Drayton in Shropshire, the third of eight children of Rev Richard Hugh Cholmondeley (1827–1910) and his wife Emily Beaumont (1831–1893). Her great-uncle was the hymn-writing bishop Reginald Heber and her niece the writer Stella Benson. An uncle, Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall was host to the American novelist Mark Twain on his visits to England. Her sister Hester, who died in 1892, wrote poetry and kept a journal, selections of both appearing in Mary's family memoir, Under One Roof (1918). After brief periods in Farnborough, Warwickshire and Leaton, Shropshire, the family returned to Hodnet when her father was appointed rector in 1874 in succession to his father. Much of the first 30 years of her life was taken up with helping her sickly mother run the household and her father with parish work, although she was debilitated with asthma. She entertained her brothers and sisters with stories from an early age. After her father retired in 1896, she moved with him and her sister Diana to Condover Hall, which they had inherited from Reginald. They sold it and moved to Albert Gate Mansions in Knightsbridge, London. After her father died, she lived with her sister Victoria, moving between Ufford, Suffolk, and 2 Leonard Place, Kensington. During the war she did clerical work in the Carlton House Terrace Hospital. The sisters moved in 1919 to 4 Argyll Road, Kensington, where Mary died on 15 July 1925. She never married.

What Spoon River Anthology does for a Midwestern small town, Turns and Movies does for the world of vaudeville. Like Masters, like Aiken: passions, betrayals, secrets, sins, victories, defeats, and inevitable losing struggles against age and death are the stuff of this work. And that's only the first part of the book. The rest of the book consists of a set of four long poems: Discordants, Evensong, Disenchantment and This Dance of Life. In these poems Aiken takes on a subject that strikes home now just as much as it did then: what happens to love when the flame of romance flickers, or even goes out? Aiken's men - he always writes from a man's point of view - make a variety of decisions, but for Aiken, the underlying determinant of all of those choices, for good or ill, is the ongoing, quiet, patient force of life itself:"A light wind blew; the curtains stirred; The east grew pale; a sleepy birdSang a few notes, then life was still:A calm, unhurrying, soulless will."Aiken's words may be a almost a century old, but they still speak powerfully today. Enjoy!

It's 1991 in West Belfast. With their husbands either locked up or killed, Marie, Cassie and Nora are just trying to get on with their lives, despite the bombs, burning buses and soldiers trampling the flower beds. Life must go on – after all, there's still laundry to do and kids to feed.
But when a mysterious young woman turns up on Marie's doorstep and disrupts their girls' night out, the devastating revelations which ensue will shatter dreams and threaten their friendship irrevocably.
Sharply funny, moving, yet never shying from the harsh realities of life during the Troubles, Bold Girls is a celebration of women's strength under siege.
It was first performed by 7:84 Scottish People's Theatre at Cumbernauld Theatre in 1990 and on tour. The play announced Rona Munro as one of the best playwrights of her generation, winning her the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for 1990-91.
This new edition was published alongside the revival at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, in June 2018.

Cate McNider's poetry is a remarkable journey through the depths of the human experience. In Escape Velocity, she invites us to explore the uncharted territories of our inner selves and discover what lies beneath the surface. With each poem, she fearlessly confronts her own conditioning and strips away the layers of habit and illusion that obscure our true nature.
Her words are a profound meditation on the power of vulnerability and the transformative force of love and understanding. McNider takes us on a journey through the Void, the space within ourselves where we can find the answers to life's most profound questions.
Through her daring, honest, and often humorous approach, McNider reminds us that we are all the Source of our own reality. Her poetry is not just a reportage of her own transcendent process, but a call to action for each of us to undertake our own journey of self-discovery.
Escape Velocity is not just a collection of poems, but a profound work of art that challenges us to see ourselves and thus the world with new eyes. McNider's courage and insight will leave you potently aware, daring you to take the leap into the unknown and discover the truth that lies within.
