Synopsis

Five friends are staying at a remote cottage in the Cornish countryside, where they're joined by an American. While helping clean out a local well, the six discover an ancient cup buried within. This cup seems to have a long and mysterious history—could it even be the fabled Holy Grail? Investigating the cup's identity soon ignites simmering tensions among the group of uneasy "friends" as their personalities, desires, fears, and hopes begin to clash. In this highly modernist novel, Mary Butts adapts the grail myth to early 20th century England, flavored with tinges of Greek mythology, psychoanalysis, and fable. The prose, heavy with allusion, is abstract, kaleidoscopic, and dreamlike, inviting comparison to Virginia Woolf . Two of the main characters, the strong-willed Scylla and her brother Felix, are said to be stand-ins for Butts and her brother, who, like those two fictional bohemians, were down at heel scions of a formerly wealthy aristocratic bloodline. Armed with Madness was highly regarded by its contemporaries, appearing as an edition illustrated by Jean Cocteau and inviting praise for Butts' forward-reaching prose style from the likes of Ford Madox Ford and Ezra Pound. Despite this, it has slipped into obscurity and remains frequently out of print. Mary Butts (died 1937) was a major literary figure of the early 20th century. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. As a work of classic literary fiction, Armed With Madness exemplifies the narrative craft and social insight that defined great storytelling of its era. Literary fiction of this period was characterized by careful attention to character psychology, social milieu, and the moral questions that animated public discourse.

I WENT TO WORK when I was just out of grammar school. I got a job as quotation-board boy in a stock-brokerage office. I was quick at figures. At school I did three years of arithmetic in one. I was particularly good at mental arithmetic. As quotation-board boy I posted the numbers on the big board in the customers' room. One of the customers usually sat by the ticker and called out the prices. They couldn't come too fast for me. I have always remembered figures. No trouble at all. There were plenty of other employes in that office. Of course I made friends with the other fellows, but the work I did, if the market was active, kept me too busy from ten A.M. to three P.M. to let me do much talking. I don't care for it, anyhow, during business hours.

In this poetic masterpiece, Sir Edwin Arnold describes the life and teachings of Buddha. The man who was to become known as Buddha to the world was born as Prince Gautama of India but he rejected the worldly riches and abandoned the reigns of power when he embarked on a journey to discover the meaning of life. This poem reveals Buddha's life from the Buddhist perspective but you don't have to be a Buddhist to appreciate this poetic work. As you read about Buddha's journey you will embark on your own course of discovery. First published in 1879, the book has become a classic and has been published in many editions and many languages. Not only is it deeply philosophical in nature, but because of its poetic form and its narrative of the dramatic incidents in Siddhartha's life, it is delightful and absorbing reading.

A Mounted Policeman goes north after a killer and finds a woman who confesses to the murder herself, a river of burning forest, and a family that has been protecting somebody for years. Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north; he later renounced hunting altogether. The forest fire is the best thing in the book. Fifty-five paintings by Munch, Bellows and their contemporaries, from a snowbound Hudson River to the murderess herself, echo the book's long chase through fire, ice and guilt.

One of the ‘truths’ about writers is that after a successful first book the agonies of the second devour both time and talent. For Daniel Sheehan that seems to have been turned on its head. Rather than go forward it was easier to look back, to dredge rather than furrow, gathering words, lines and phrases from the past and re-fashioning, distilling and evolving stories of simplicity, complexity, light and dark. Sometimes very dark.
His work is often characterized by a modern, intimate, and somewhat mysterious style, focusing deeply on the emotional connection between lovers.
