Beschreibung

In "An Author's Mind: The Book of Title-pages," Martin Farquhar Tupper explores the intricate relationship between literary creation and its presentation. Tupper employs a unique blend of introspective prose and structured verse to dissect the concepts of authorship, identity, and the role of aesthetic in literature. This work, characterized by its reflective tone and meticulous attention to typographical design, highlights the importance of title-pages as both artistic expressions and gateways to the text. Set within the context of 19th-century literature, Tupper's profound insights echo the emerging romantic sensibilities, challenging readers to consider the significance of form alongside content. Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810–1889) was a celebrated English poet and essayist whose intellectual engagements frequently revolved around the nature of writing and its cultural implications. His background in law and his exposure to various literary circles deeply influenced his philosophy of writing, prompting him to contemplate the intricacies of literary craftsmanship. Tupper's innovative perspectives on authorship were, in part, a response to the shifting literary paradigms of his time, allowing him to carve a niche for himself within the Victorian literary landscape. "An Author's Mind" is a must-read for those intrigued by the intersections of art, literature, and authorship. Tupper's sophisticated analysis invites readers not only to appreciate the visual and conceptual beauty of title-pages but also to ponder the profound questions surrounding creativity and identity in the literary world. This book serves both scholars and casual readers, illuminating the vital role of presentation in the artistic endeavor.

The Roman Empire is coming apart at the seams, relying on German recruits and foederati to hold the empire together. The eastern and western empires are ruled by incompetent young men who allow their German warlords to rule for them, but imperial elites conspire against the generals. Yul the Younger is a Saxon boy negotiating life in the empire with strong ties to his family in Germania. His father, Yul the Elder, sends Yul to a monastery school to learn the ways of the empire, with the father serving the empire as a quaestor (treasurer) in the east of Britannia. Yul the elder’s job is to make certain that the mostly German troopers of the Saxon Shore are fed, equipped, and paid, but Romano-British landlords are withholding taxes while enslaving Germans and building lavish country houses. Life in the monastic school at Verulamium (Saint Albans) proves difficult for Yul the Younger with monks insisting he give up his Germanic gods for Christ. He is also harassed by the entitled sons of British elites. Yul dares to make his escape with his best friend, a Pict, named Keaffer. Both enlist in the Brave Companions stationed at Othona as self-declared Emperor Flavius Claudius Constantine opts to invade Gaul to capture the purple and stop the Germanic tribes from crossing the Rhine Frontier to settle in the dying empire. Tall, blond, and broad, Yul joins the invasion of Europa. He also finds love and seeks revenge for the wrongs committed by Britons against his family and companions.

This WWII combat history vividly recounts the exploits of the US 66th Armored Regiment from its initial formation to D-Day and the Race for Berlin. The U.S. 66th Armored Regiment was the only American heavy tank unit to see combat in World War I. By the time America went to war in Europe a second time, it was on the cutting edge of armored warfare. From its baptism of fire in the mud of the Western Front in 1918 to its triumphant march into Berlin in July 1945, Iron Knights tells the story of this legendary regiment.    When the Great War ended, the 66th Armored Regiment served as a laboratory for new ideas and equipment. After training under Gen. George S. Patton, the 66th distinguished itself in numerous battles during World War II, earning six battle streamers for the unit and a Medal of Honor for one of its officers.
