  Deception has been a fundamental part of human interaction throughout history, shaping societies, relationships, and institutions. Whether through subtle manipulation, outright lies, or carefully crafted misinformation, deception influences decisions, perceptions, and behaviors in both personal and collective spheres. While often viewed negatively, deception is not always malicious; in some cases, it serves strategic, protective, or even necessary functions. Understanding the role deception plays in society requires examining its various forms, motivations, and consequences. 
  One of the most common areas where deception is prevalent is in personal relationships. People deceive for different reasons, ranging from self-preservation to maintaining social harmony. White lies, for example, are often used to spare feelings or avoid unnecessary conflict, while more harmful deceptions, such as infidelity or emotional manipulation, can cause deep and lasting damage. The complexity of deception in relationships highlights its dual nature—sometimes beneficial, sometimes destructive. 
  Beyond personal interactions, deception extends into professional and institutional environments. In workplaces, deceptive practices can manifest as misleading job descriptions, false performance evaluations, or office politics designed to manipulate outcomes. Deception in business, such as false advertising or hidden fees, can mislead consumers, erode trust, and cause financial harm. Similarly, political deception—through propaganda, misinformation, and strategic framing of facts—shapes public opinion, influencing elections, policies, and societal norms.

  Mary Frances Butts was born on 13th December 1890 in Poole, Dorset. 
  Her early years were spent at Salterns, an 18th-century house overlooking Poole Harbour.  Sadly in 1905 her father died, and she was sent for boarding at St Leonard's school for girls in St Andrews. 
  Her mother remarried and, from 1909, Mary studied at Westfield College in London, and here, first became aware of her bisexual feelings.  She was sent down for organising a trip to Epsom races and only completed her degree in 1914 when she graduated from the London School of Economics.  By then Mary had become an admirer of the occultist Aleister Crowley and she was given a co-authorship credit on his ‘Magick (Book 4)’. 
  In 1916, she began the diary which would now detail her future life and be a constant reference point for her observations and her absorbing experiences. 
  During World War I, she was doing social work for the London County Council in Hackney Wick, and involved in a lesbian relationship.  Life changed after meeting the modernist poet, John Rodker and they married in 1918. 
  In 1921 she spent 3 months at Aleister Crowley's Abbey of Thelema in Sicily; she found the practices dreadful and also acquired a drug habit.  Mary now spent time writing in Dorset, including her celebrated book of short stories ‘Speed the Plough’ which saw fully develop her unique Modernist prose style. 
  Europe now beckoned and several years were spent in Paris befriending many artists and writing further extraordinary stories.   
  She was continually sought after by literary magazines and also published several short story collections as books. Although a Modernist writer she worked in other genres but is essentially only known for her short stories.  Mary was deeply committed to nature conservation and wrote several pamphlets attacking the growing pollution of the countryside. 
  In 1927, she divorced and the following year her novel ‘Armed with Madness’ was published.  A further marriage followed in 1930 and time was spent attempting to settle in London and Newcastle before setting up home on the western tip of Cornwall.  By 1934 the marriage had failed. 
  Mary Butts died on 5th March 1937, at the West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance, after an operation for a perforated gastric ulcer. She was 46.

  May 11th 1941 - Berchtesgaden. The day after Rudolf Hess took off from Augsburg and hadn't yet returned or sent any signal, Adolf Hitler had to say something to justify Hess' so far unexplained disappearance. Not least for the benefit of the German nation and his then trading ally, Soviet Russia.
  Consequently he authorised a statement saying that Hess was suffering from a mental derangement and had succeeded in obtaining an aeroplane against the strict orders of the Fuhrer. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, but an explanation had at least been proffered before British propaganda commenced. The unlikely explanation has however proven durable, some still believing it to be true 80 years later.
  In this, their eighth book on the affair, Harris and Wilbourn demonstrate that far from being a random act, the flight had been meticulously planned, using state of the art German radio technology. Using contemporary equipment, maps and charts they demonstrate the true nature and character of the flight and explain what went wrong, leading to the sensational and very public arrival of Rudolf Hess in Scotland at 23.09hrs on May 10th 1941.
