Synopsis

Mark Paul Smith graduated college on an Air Force scholarship with dreams of becoming a pilot. He had some downtime after graduation and before reporting for duty so he decided to hitchhike the world. A decision that would change his life forever. As he traveled, his approach to life and his future decisions changed. He hitchhiked through the Iron Curtain and worked on a collective farm in Hungary only to find that communism wasn't our real enemy. He met people from North Vietnam who showed him the real enemy was the U.S. war machine. Being an American was not popular in those days, but the people of the world showed Smith kindness and kept him alive when he ran out of money. The long road to decision showed him that people everywhere want peace, not war.Mark Paul Smith's hitchhike from Indiana to India in 1972 changed him from being an Air Force Officer into a conscientious objector. His faith in the United States of America was restored when he sued the government and won his case in federal court. His journey is one of faith, contemplation, and awakening, mixed with the freedom and abandonment of the 70s.

From the best-selling author of Cardinal comes a searing examination of the power imbalance in our legal system - where exposing the truth is never guaranteed and, for victims, justice is often elusive.

A masterful and deeply troubling expose, Witness is the culmination of five years' research for award-winning investigative journalist Louise Milligan.
Throughout her career charting the experiences of people who have the courage to come forward to police and then look to find justice in court, Milligan has watched how witnesses are treated (or, too frequently, mistreated) in the courtroom. They have described to her how they relive the associated trauma, often years later. Then, she saw this first-hand when she became a witness and was cross-examined herself in the trial of the decade, R v George Pell.
Never-before-published court transcripts expose widespread systemic flaws. And through a combination of extraordinarily candid interviews with defence counsel, prosecutors and even judges, and the heartbreaking stories of witnesses in a number of high-profile cases, the brutal reality of the system is laid bare.
Revealing the devastating effects of an adversarial legal system that can be sexist, callous and too often weighted towards the rich and powerful, Milligan also highlights its failure to protect the wellbeing of the most vulnerable. In detailing these flaws and the ongoing human cost, Witness is a compelling call for change.

Friends and family knew Henry Louis Aaron as quick-witted, hilarious, and fiercely opinionated beyond what was shown in public. With the encouragement of Aaron’s family, Terence Moore now reveals this heartfelt portrait of Hank Aaron,
featuring nearly 40 years of stories plus never-before-told insights from the home run king.

You’ll see his wisdom. You’ll see his foresight. You’ll see his humor. You’ll see his anger. You’ll see his humanity. You’ll see Aaron as you’ve never seen him before.

Aaron not only battled racism during his playing days, but also during his days as a front office executive. The Hall of Famer shared this with Moore, who experienced his own strife at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as the first Black sports
columnist ever in the Deep South. The two leaned on each other while developing a tight relationship, and Moore became The Hank Aaron Whisperer whenever the baseball great wanted to convey messages to the public.

The Real Hank Aaron captures the icon’s contagious laugh and pointed views, from the depth of his admiration for Jackie Robinson to his true thoughts on Barry Bonds and the steroid era. Featuring Aaron’s views on race, politics, media, and
sports fandom, this is a charming and illuminating glimpse at the man outside the spotlight. It’s an intimate perspective on the baseball legend, the culmination of decades of friendship and correspondence.

The temperature was forty degrees below zero when fighter planes screamed out of the clouds, puncturing the fuselage with a spray of machinegun fire and sending the bomber beside them into a death spin. This was followed by intense flak, as a hundred cannons on the ground tried to blow them out of the sky. When they finally made it back to the base, another enemy awaited them: homesickness, crushing boredom, relentless cold, and more mud than they could imagine.Bert Ibelle was a nineteen-year-old freshman at Dartmouth College when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps to fly dozens of bomber missions over Nazi-occupied Europe and win the Purple Heart. His buddy, Fran Brighenti, served as an infantry marksman on the opposite side of the globe, slogging through the steaming jungles of the Philippine and the fiery hell of Okinawa.Their wars couldn't have been more different, nor could their approach to life. While the ever-exuberant Fran was a ladies man, Bert only had eyes for ""Red," the girl back home who was in love with another young man. This is their story—one that combines terror, humor, friendship, and a son's search for his elusive father.
