The landmark study of how medical errors are managed among surgeons and other hospital staff—now in an updated edition with a new preface and epilogue.

When it was first published, Forgive and Remember offered groundbreaking insight into the training and lives of young surgeons. It quickly emerged as the definitive sociological study on the subject. While medical errors are both inevitable and potentially devastating, Bosk found that they could be forgiven—as long as they were remembered and never repeated.

In this second edition, Bosk reflects more than twenty years later on how things have changed, both in the medical profession and in sociology. With an extensive new preface, epilogue, and appendix by the author, this updated edition of Forgive and Remember is as timely as ever.

Are you tired of hearing people constantly complain and moan about a world problem, but offer you no solutions as to what you can do to help resolve this issue?
This might be from close friends or family constantly taking a negative view on this particular issue, or even from hearing about the problem on the news, but not hearing any potential solutions.
Can you tell what problem I am talking about yet? Of course, I am talking about manufactured scarcity.
Anyone who vaguely follows this topic will know that it is consistently increasing in the US, but many don’t know that it is also increasing across most other countries.
So, what can you and I do to help improve the situation?
The Power to Stop Any Illusion of Problems will help offer an insight into how these situations occur, in simple and understandable terms, so that you don’t get confused or demotivated by too much technical jargon.
It will then also show you ways that positive change can be made, rather than just telling you about all the negative impacts of scarcity and making you feel as though all hope is lost.
You will be amazed at the content included in this book, and the detail that is provided for you to digest. But what really sets this book apart from its competitors is that the information is so well presented and easy to understand.

While a bit outdated in many of the more complex descriptions of several of the phenomena described, this book is nonetheless still fun and relevant for a person interested in basic chemistry or physics tricks, and the devices built in the book can be easily replicated with more modern materials. The book is split up into many little experiments, tricks, with an explanation on how it works, what's happening, and how to reproduce the effects at home.(summary by Kyle Van DeGlast)

Floods of the Tiber in Ancient Rome

    Gregory S. Aldrete

A study of the impact of flooding on the ancient city during the classical period.

While the remains of its massive aqueducts serve as tangible reminders of Rome’s efforts to control its supply of drinking water, there are scant physical reminders that other waters sometimes raged out of control. In fact, floods were simply a part of life in ancient Rome, where proximity to the Tiber left a substantial part of the city vulnerable to the river’s occasional transgressions.

Here, in the first book-length treatment of the impact of floods on an ancient city, Gregory S. Aldrete draws upon a diverse range of scientific and cultural data to develop a rich and detailed account of flooding in Rome throughout the classical period.

Aldrete explores in detail the overflowing river’s destructive effects, drawing from ancient and modern written records and literary accounts, analyses of the topography and hydrology of the Tiber drainage basin, visible evidence on surviving structures, and the known engineering methods devised to limit the reach of rising water. He discusses the strategies the Romans employed to alleviate or prevent flooding, their social and religious attitudes toward floods, and how the threat of inundation influenced the development of the city’s physical and economic landscapes.

“Floods of the Tiber in Ancient Rome is that rare thing in scholarship, a work that genuinely fills a gap in the scholarly literature. Professor Aldrete has brilliantly illuminated an aspect of ancient Rome that was ever present to the city’s inhabitants but almost invisible to modern historians.” —Stanley Burstein, history teacher

“Raises important questions about the effects of flooding of the Tiber on the city of ancient Rome and its inhabitants and explores why Romans did not take more sweeping steps to reduce, if not eliminate, the dangers of urban flooding. There is no comparable book-length study of this topic, so this work fills a real need. It will be of interest not only to students of ancient history, but to hydrologists and students of urban studies as well. Certainly it will give us classicists much to think about in our assessment of urban life in ancient Rome.” —Harry B. Evans, Fordham University, author of Aqueduct Hunting in the Seventeenth Century

    The Science of Deception -...

    Michael Pettit

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Americans were fascinated with fraud. P. T. Barnum artfully exploited the American yen for deception, and even Mark Twain championed it, arguing that lying was virtuous insofar as it provided the glue for all interpersonal intercourse. But deception was not used solely to delight, and many fell prey to the schemes of con men and the wiles of spirit mediums. As a result, a number of experimental psychologists set themselves the task of identifying and eliminating the illusions engendered by modern, commercial life. By the 1920s, however, many of these same psychologists had come to depend on deliberate misdirection and deceitful stimuli to support their own experiments. The Science of Deception explores this paradox, weaving together the story of deception in American commercial culture with its growing use in the discipline of psychology. Michael Pettit reveals how deception came to be something that psychologists not only studied but also employed to establish their authority. They developed a host of tools—the lie detector, psychotherapy, an array of personality tests, and more—for making deception more transparent in the courts and elsewhere. Pettit’s study illuminates the intimate connections between the scientific discipline and the marketplace during a crucial period in the development of market culture. With its broad research and engaging tales of treachery, The Science of Deception will appeal to scholars and general readers alike.
