Beschreibung

Rural Delivery Expansions explores the transformative impact of extending postal service to remote areas of the United States, highlighting how this initiative spurred economic development and strengthened social cohesion. The book examines the political history behind this policy choice, revealing how government subsidies and logistical innovation, like the establishment of star routes, overcame geographical barriers. This expansion wasn't simply about delivering mail; it was about fostering political inclusion and connecting isolated rural communities to the broader nation, a deliberate effort that reshaped access to vital resources.

The book progresses across three major sections, first dissecting the political climate that fueled the demand for rural free delivery. It then investigates the practical solutions and technological adaptations that made widespread delivery feasible, spotlighting the challenges faced by postal workers. Finally, the narrative analyzes the profound effects of expanded mail service on rural communities, including improved literacy rates and enhanced access to news and commercial opportunities. By integrating political, economic, and social perspectives, Rural Delivery Expansions offers a comprehensive understanding of this pivotal moment in American history.

The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education confronts the silent ascendancy of a therapeutic ethos across the educational system and into the workplace. Controversial and compelling, Kathryn Ecclestone and Dennis Hayes’ classic text uses a wealth of examples across the education system, from primary schools to university and the workplace, to show how therapeutic education is turning children, young people and adults into anxious and self-preoccupied individuals rather than aspiring, optimistic and resilient learners who want to know everything about the world.Remaining extremely topical, the chapters illuminate the powerful effects of therapeutic education, including:How therapeutic learning is taking shape, now and in the futureHow therapeutic ideas from popular culture have come to govern social thought and policiesHow the fostering of dependence and compulsory participation in therapeutic activities that encourage the disclosing of emotions, can undermine parents’ and teachers’ confidence and authorityHow therapeutic forms of teacher training undermine faith in the pursuit of knowledgeHow political initiatives in emotional literacy, emotional wellbeing and ‘positive mental health’ propagate a diminished view of human potential throughout the education system and the workplace. The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education is an eye-opening read for every teacher and leader across the field of education, and every parent and student, who is passionate about the power of knowledge to transform people’s lives. It is a call for a debate about the growing impact of therapeutic education and what it means for learning now and in the future.

This is the extraordinary story of how salt fish from Shetland became one of the staple foods of Europe, powered an economic boom, and inspired artists, writers, and musicians.

It ranges from the wild waters of the North Atlantic, the ice-filled fjords of Greenland and the remote islands of Faroe to the dining tables of London's middle classes, the bacalao restaurants of Spain and the Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe.

As well as following the historical thread and exploring how very different cultures were drawn together by the salt fish trade, John Goodlad meets those whose lives revolve around the industry in the twenty-first century and addresses today's pressing themes of sustainability, climate change, and food choices.

A long time ago Finns, Finno-Ugric tribes and Baltic tribes practised animistic nature-based belief, where everything in nature had its own place and spirit. Trees were widely worshipped. Some trees, holier than others were called spirit trees. In this course, you will learn about ancient tree worship and mythologies and stories told about different tree species and gods, goddesses and magical creatures related to them. How these trees were used in folk magic and how people saw them. Sacred groves were very common. These special places were thought to harbour gods and goddesses, so they were also worshipped and given sacrificial gifts of food, drink and treasures.Altars were built in these groves for the purpose of worship. An altar was usually a large stone or a wooden table holding a statue or an image of a particular deity.Sacred groves were communally owned by an entire village and were generally located in the woods near the village. People could visit a grove alone or in groups to show reverence to the gods. It was believed that trees understood humans, especially women. People told their troubles to trees and felt certain that the trees kept their secrets. In the old days, people relied more on the forest than they do today. The entire forest ecosystem offered almost all of the materials needed for life: shelter and abundant food like berries, plants, mushrooms and animals.Learn about the Christmas tree tradition and how it arrived in Finland and the tree emuu's, these were spirits that created the different tree species. This course also includes tips for those of you who are interested in grounding and building better spiritual connections with nature and your surroundings.
Niina Pekantytär aka Fairychamber is known for her passion and knowledge of Finnish mythology and folklore. Born in northern Finland, Niina grew up listening to these stories from a very young age.

    Sample Insights:
    1) Most people believe we live in a purely objective world, governed by science and matter, but this is not the truth. The world we live in is both objective and spiritual.
    2) We often overlook the spiritual aspect, or fail to acknowledge it completely, because it is impossible to talk about spiritualism in a scientific context. The fact that spiritual reality cannot be quantifiable leads many to believe that it’s simply not there.
