Synopsis

Mysterious Missing Objects explores the captivating realm of history's unexplained disappearances, focusing on lost treasures, missing manuscripts, and vanished artifacts. These irretrievable losses reveal intriguing insights into human nature and the fragility of cultural heritage. Consider the Florentine Diamond, a treasure sparking relentless searches, or the lost scrolls of Alexandria, whose absence potentially erased entire chapters of history.

The book uniquely blends History with True Crime, appealing to those fascinated by historical investigations and unsolved mysteries.

The book progresses methodically, first introducing the concept of "irretrievable loss" and the motivations behind the pursuit of these objects. It then presents detailed case studies, drawing upon historical records and archaeological findings to investigate disappearances like that of the Ark of the Covenant.

Finally, it analyzes the broader implications of these losses, considering their impact on historical narratives and ethical considerations surrounding their potential recovery. Through rigorous research and a multi-faceted perspective incorporating forensic science and criminology, Mysterious Missing Objects offers a comprehensive yet accessible overview.

It acknowledges the limitations of available information, presenting different viewpoints on controversies surrounding ownership and authenticity. The book invites readers to contemplate the profound impact of what is no longer there, making it valuable for anyone interested in history, archaeology, or the pursuit of missing objects.

  • Harvest the Vote - How Democrats Can Win Again in Rural America - cover

Harvest the Vote - How Democrats...

    Jane Kleeb

From Democratic Party rising star Jane Kleeb, an urgent and stirring road map showing how the Democratic Party can, and should, engage rural America

The Democratic Party has lost an entire generation of rural voters. By focusing the majority of their message and resources on urban and coastal voters, Democrats have sacrificed entire regions of the country where there is more common ground and shared values than what appears on the surface.
In Harvest the Vote, Jane Kleeb, chair of Nebraska’s Democratic Party and founder of Bold Nebraska, brings us a lively and sweeping argument for why the Democrats shouldn’t turn away from rural America. As a party leader and longtime activist, Kleeb speaks from experience. She’s been fighting the national party for more resources and building a grassroots movement to flex the power of a voting bloc that has long been ignored and forgotten.
Kleeb persuasively argues that the hottest issues of the day can be solved hand in hand with rural people. On climate change, Kleeb shows that the vast spaces of rural America can be used to enact clean energy innovations. And issues of eminent domain and corporate overreach will galvanize unlikely alliances of family farmers, ranchers, small business owners, progressives, and tribal leaders, much as they did when she helped fight the Keystone XL pipeline. The hot-button issues of guns and abortion that the Republican Party uses to wedge voters against one another can be bridged by putting a megaphone next to issues critical to rural communities.
Written with a fiery voice and commonsense solutions, Harvest the Vote is both a call to action and a much-needed balm for a highly divided nation.

NO.1 BESTSELLER ANT MIDDLETON SHARES HIS SECRETS ABOUT HIS POSITIVE MINDSET AND TEACHES YOU TO LIVE A LIFE WITH ZERO NEGATIVITY
There are times when life feels like it has you cornered: financial difficulties, relationship issues, work problems, all of the above. Every one of us, at one time or another, will have to face up to the challenges that come our way. And there are two ways of meeting them: negatively, where blame is the answer, where other people are at fault, where you haven’t been treated fairly. Or positively, where you own the situation, learn and grow from it, and become a better person at the end of it.
Letting you into areas of his life he’s never talked about before, in Zero Negativity, Ant will show you how to embrace failure and use it to your advantage, how to see change as the foundation of your future success, how to develop resilience, how to deal with bullies, what it means to be a positive roll model, and how to live a life with no regrets.
This book will not tell you who to be, where you should live, or what job you should do. That’s up to you. What this book is for, however, is to give you the tools you need to become the best possible version of yourself, to own who and what you are, and to live your life with Zero Negativity.
Ant Middleton's Sunday Times bestseller is a compelling autobiography that explores the psychology of living a healthy, stress-free life. His personal journey of self-esteem and growth, coupled with his military background, makes this a must-read for anyone interested in self-help, personal development and management.
For fans of Ollie Ollerton (Break Point), Mark 'Billy' Billingham (The Hard Way), David Goggins (Never Finished), Jason Fox (Battle Scars), and Bear Grylls (Never Give Up).

Witnessing the growing division in our communities, cities, and country is heartbreaking. Our worlds feel ripped apart, and we all know the pain of feeling separated.
While we universally agree on the need to bridge our divides, our calls for unity often intensify our differences instead of healing them. One significant reason is the irresponsible use of science. Its misuse, abuse, and overuse have deepened our divides.
This book begins with accessible chapters on the fundamentals of scientific tools, gradually progressing to discuss their abuse in the most contentious debates of our time, including global warming, COVID-19, Big Pharma, abortion, and gender fluidity.
After reading, you'll gain the ability to critically assess scientific claims in the news and engage in debates where science is misrepresented. Join me on this journey to unravel the misuse and limits of science and take a transformative step toward healing our divide.

  • The Delectable Negro - Human Consumption and Homoeroticism within US Slave Culture - cover

    The Delectable Negro - Human...

    Vincent Woodard, E. Patrick Johnson

Scholars of US and transatlantic slavery have largely ignored or dismissed accusations that Black Americans were cannibalized. Vincent Woodard takes the enslaved person's claims of human consumption seriously, focusing on both the starvation of the slave and the tropes of cannibalism on the part of the slaveholder, and further draws attention to the ways in which Blacks experienced their consumption as a fundamentally homoerotic occurrence.

Utilizing many staples of African American literature and culture, such as the slave narratives of Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Jacobs, and Frederick Douglass, as well as other less circulated materials like James L. Smith's slave narrative, runaway slave advertisements, and numerous articles from Black newspapers published in the nineteenth century, Woodard traces the racial assumptions, political aspirations, gender codes, and philosophical frameworks that dictated both European and white American arousal towards Black males and hunger for Black male flesh. He concludes with an examination of the controversial chain gang oral sex scene in Toni Morrison's Beloved, suggesting that even at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century, we are still at a loss for language with which to describe Black male hunger within a plantation culture of consumption.

    Contains mature themes.
