Synopsis

Lawsuit Absurdities examines seemingly bizarre legal cases to reveal deeper societal values and evolving legal standards. The book investigates disputes ranging from personal injury claims against corporations to pet custody battles, offering insights into how the legal system adapts to modern challenges. Did you know that some lawsuits against fast-food chains argue corporate accountability for obesity? Or that courts are increasingly grappling with the legal status of pets, moving beyond considering them mere property? The book explores the tension between individual responsibility and corporate accountability in personal injury lawsuits, highlighting the shift from "buyer beware" to an expectation of greater corporate responsibility. It also traces the changing role of pets in society, influencing legal decisions about their welfare. By analyzing these "frivolous lawsuits," the book provides a framework for understanding the historical context of tort law and contract law and emphasizes the complexities of applying established legal frameworks to contemporary problems.

The book begins by defining "frivolous" lawsuits before diving into personal injury cases and pet custody disputes. It uses court documents, legal briefs, and social science research to support its analysis. Ultimately, Lawsuit Absurdities encourages a nuanced understanding of the legal process and its impact on public policy, individual behavior, and perceptions of justice.

Raul Baez was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. His early childhood consisted of massive traumatic experiences in a chaotic and dysfunctional family. At the age of thirteen, he dropped out of seventh grade and soon after embarked on twenty-six years of drug abuse. The addiction led to multiple incarcerations for a total of twenty-three years. Attempting to commit “suicide by cop” in a shootout with two NYPD police officers, he survived a barrage of bullets—thirty-two shots. In total, Raul had six near-death experiences. As a result of these events he faced over two hundred years in prison. He struggled with homelessness, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. For all intents and purposes he should be dead or in prison for the rest of his life!
Raul unequivocally and unambiguously attributes his powerful transformation to his relationship with God. With a renewed mind, he was able to eradicate the values and belief system that subjugated him for decades. He eventually earned an associate’s degree in real estate appraisal, a bachelor’s degree in personal finance to better understand how money really works, and a master’s degree in business. He started a Sole Proprietorship, an S-CORP, and a non-profit which are the genesis of Set Your Thoughts Free. He is fully passionate about his mission to equip individuals transitioning from prison with biblical principles, character development, and financial literacy. He has developed his program with various youth organizations, high schools, and multiple prisons in New York State and New England.

In Educational Pluralism and American Democracy, education policy expert Ashley Rogers Berner envisions a K–12 education system that serves both the individual and the common good. Calling for education reform that will enable US public schools to fulfill the longstanding promise of American education, Berner proposes a radical reimagining of both the structure and content of US public school systems. She urges policymakers to embrace educational pluralism, an internationally common model in which the government funds diverse types of schools that deliver more universal content.

Providing an incisive assessment of democratic education throughout the world, Berner argues that educational pluralism can build students' exposure to diverse viewpoints and shared knowledge within distinctive school communities. She shows how pluralism steers a middle path that enables equitable access, promotes academic excellence, and avoids the zero-sum games that characterize US education policy.

In this thought-provoking proposal, Berner lays out a roadmap for big-picture reform, expertly delineating the mechanisms through which educational norms can change. A practical conclusion describes concrete moves that advocates can pursue to garner support and advance new legislation.
