Synopsis

Myth, magic and mayhem! The gods didn’t die out, they simply got day jobs...
Follow C on a mythological and mysterious journey through the known realms in search of her lost client, a young model named Perdita. From the depths of Hades’ underworld to the African savannah, C never relents in her pursuit and is determined to uncover what has happened to her charge.
Chock-full of wild characters, both god and mortal, C finds herself always just one step behind a strange and enigmatic force that appears to revel in mocking her. Quickly it becomes clear that her faceless nemesis has a far greater scheme planned than C initially realized.
It is best to heed the warning, however, that Hell hath no fury like a sorceress scorned. And C is no mere sorceress!

On the day of the assault, I sat peacefully in the park engrossed in a book when slavers descended upon monstrous ships, snatching everyone in sight, myself included.
Transported to the sinister confines of Nuerva, its skyline dominated by jagged edifices, I became the possession of a man known as the Captain, enduring captivity under his cruel whims. It took me many days to summon the courage to flee.
Alone and terrified, I fled to the farthest reaches of the city, where a glimmer of hope awaited. Across the expanse lay another city, vibrant and colorful, promising sanctuary. All I had to do was traverse the bridge.
But fate intervened. At the cusp of freedom, on the threshold between light and darkness, a gunshot shattered my escape.
Yet, my story wasn't over. Death would not claim me yet; destiny had other plans in store.
Note: "The Black City of Nuerva" in print format is an intimate voyage recounted through the eyes of its protagonist in first-person narrative. Throughout the book, the main character fluidly embodies both male and female perspectives. Complementing the narrative are 60 original artworks, each meticulously crafted to reimagine key moments within the story. The creation of this book and its accompanying artwork spanned several years, reflecting the dedication and toil invested in bringing this imaginative world to life.

First published in 1975, The Cage was a graphic novel before there was a name for the medium. Cryptic and disturbing, it spurns narrative for atmosphere, guiding us through a labyrinthine series of crumbling facades, disarrayed rooms and desolate landscapes, as time stutters backward and forward. Within the cage's barbed-wire confines, we observe humanity only through its traces: a filmic sequence of discarded objects –headphones, inky stains, dishevelled bedsheets –scored by a deafening cacophony of breaths, cries and unsettling silence.

This new edition, which includes an introduction by comics master Seth, brings Martin Vaughn-James's nightmarish vision to a new generation of readers.

'I don't use the word "masterpiece" lightly. I think The Cage is a masterpiece of comic art.'– Seth

'Vaughn-James remains a significant figure in comics history because his work was singular, literate, experimental, and often unsurpassably good.' – The Walrus

'It is a masterpiece, demonstrating a level of skill and insight very few have even aspired to in the nearly 40 years since its initial publication … this work is strongly recommended for every true fan of the graphic arts.' – Publishers Weekly (starred review)
