  "The Lurking Fear" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written in November 1922, it was first published in the January through April 1923 issues of Home Brew.
  In 1921, an unnamed monster-hunter travels to Tempest Mountain, in the Catskills range, after reports of various attacks by a group of unidentified creatures against the local inhabitants reaches the media. A month before, an unusually large, destructive thunderstorm had drifted over the region. Many homes were destroyed, seemingly by the storm, but upon closer inspection, the destruction seemed to be left by an enraged beast. The affected area, originally home to only 75 citizens, was completely destroyed, leaving no survivors.

It was written in August 1933 and first published in the January 1937 issue of Weird Tales.Daniel Upton, the story's narrator, explains that he has killed his best friend, Edward Derby, and that he hopes his account will prove that he is not a murderer. "He must be cremated—he who was not Edward Derby when I shot him. I shall go mad if he is not, for I may be the next.   The human race prides itself on being the most organised of animals.  We manage the fate of all other species. All other animals bow to our control or suffer.  In diminishing numbers we allow some to live in the wild but in increasing numbers we domesticate them and whether they become part of the family, a best friend or wonderfully decorative accessory we take their compliance for granted.  Such a shame then when these creatures take umbrage and prepare their revenge on us they do so in ways designed to show that when the tables turn ‘mercy’ is just a word that we humans plead for, expect, but, of course, is always denied.
