Beschreibung

The Great War explores the causes, battles, and consequences of World War I, highlighting its lasting impact on the 20th and 21st centuries. It examines the intricate alliances, brutal realities of trench warfare and technological advancements, and the geopolitical and social transformations that followed. The book argues that the war was not merely a military conflict but a catalyst for irreversible changes in the global order, shattering empires and redrawing maps.

Before 1914, Europe was a complex web of competing nationalisms and secret treaties, which the book unpacks to explain how a single assassination ignited the war. The book begins by examining the pre-war world and then moves to detailed accounts of major battles before focusing on the aftermath, including the Treaty of Versailles. Through a combination of primary and secondary sources, the book connects military history to political, social, and economic factors.

This book offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the human experience of the war, drawing on personal accounts and narratives to bring the conflict to life. It provides a balanced and nuanced account of the war, avoiding simplistic generalizations and acknowledging the diverse perspectives of those who lived through it. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of international relations and the dangers of unchecked nationalism.

This audiobook is an altered version of the Master’s thesis Lean Production Scale-up. How a startup can scale the manufacturing of physical product innovation by Ilkka Taponen. Approximately half of the original thesis has been removed to suit the audiobook format. The audiobook edit has been designed for an audience familiar with startups and business, meaning that large portions of the basics have been removed from the Theory chapter.Today the market entry for new ideas and entrepreneurs is easier than ever as the digital age is reshaping how business is done. Through digitalization, the business environment has become highly open and widely connected. The combinations of digital technologies like edge computing and artificial intelligence, AI, enable new business model opportunities. In this fast-changing environment, the most important thing is to learn as fast as possible what to do next and what is worth doing at all. Multiple non-fiction books like The Four Steps to the Epiphany by Steve Blank and Lean Startup by Eric Ries study the modern internet-era startup business environment.Still, one aspect has not been included in the broader public discussion. The tools presented in Lean Startup concentrate on finding the market fit as efficiently as possible but assume that the same level of uncertainties does not exist in the company's internal processes. “We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters” is a famous quote by startup investor Peter Thiel. Behind the quote is the notion that there is something different and more challenging about developing physical technologies compared to online services. Manufacturing, indeed, is an underrated problem. It is much harder to take advanced technology and bring it to volume manufacturing than to design it in the first place.

A wide-ranging and incisive collection of interviews with Noam Chomsky, addressing the urgent questions of this tumultuous moment.

In these informative interviews, conducted for Truthout by C. J. Polychroniou, Noam Chomsky addresses the rapid deterioration of democracy in the United States and rising tensions globally. He examines the crumbling social fabric and fractures of the Biden era, including the halting steps toward a Green New Deal; the illegitimate authority of the Supreme Court, in particular its decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade; and the ongoing fallout from COVID-19. Chomsky also untangles the roots of the War in Ukraine, the diplomatic tensions among the United States, China, and Russia, and considers the need for climate action on an international scale.

Throughout, Chomsky "remains . . . a beacon of hope in the darkest of times" (Sarah Jaffe).

The Antichrist by Friedrich Nietzsche is an influential philosophical work which explores the metaphysical implications of Atheism and moral nihilism. Nietzsche's exploration of the potential implications of atheism leads him to conclude that, without the traditional basis provided by God, morality becomes an arbitrary set of conventions derived from human opinion. This approach undermines the Judeo-Christian conception of morality as divinely ordained and encourages readers to consider alternative systems of ethics and value. Read in English, unabridged.

Throughout history, there have been men of war and men of peace, but few have actually had a war named after them. One of them was Pontiac, also known as Obwandiyag, an Odawa chief who left his mark on history by continuing the battle against the British after their official triumph during the French and Indian War. While modern historians question how important Pontiac’s role was in shaping America’s destiny, his leadership during Pontiac’s War was seen at that time as important enough to warrant significant articles and even a few 18th century books. Since these books were written by the British, or at least men who supported their cause, the descriptions of Pontiac were often not complimentary. Likewise, 19th century authors tended to portray him as something of an evil genius who plotted against the British and then drove his people into battle.
For the most part, the conflicts that followed consisted mostly of the Native Americans suffering defeat in the face of a better-equipped adversary, interspersed with binding treaties, which, on the side of the federal government, proved not very binding at all. Occasionally, however, there arose a Native American leader of such ability that such defeats were temporarily reversed, and Little Turtle, the war chief of the Miami tribe, was one such man.
The Battle of Tippecanoe, fought on November 7, 1811 near present-day Lafayette, Indiana, involved forces of fewer than 2,000 Native American warriors and white soldiers, and only about 300 men were killed or wounded on both sides. Given those numbers, it’s apparent that the battle was far from being a Saratoga or a Gettysburg in terms of its scale or significance as an historical turning point, yet it was one of the most important battles in the early 19th century.
