Synopsis

Defense Forum Effects examines the role of international security forums in fostering collaboration and enhancing global security in an era marked by complex security challenges. It moves beyond the notion of these forums as mere symbolic gatherings, offering a detailed analysis of their tangible impacts on international partnerships, military cooperation, and global crisis response. The book highlights how these forums facilitate high-level dialogues and the development of common strategies, noting that increased interoperability through joint exercises helps nations respond to transnational security challenges. The text uses defense policy documentation and real-world case studies to support its arguments.

The book progresses by first introducing the concept of defense forums, then examining their effects on international partnerships and military cooperation, and finally analyzing their contribution to global crisis response. It argues that effectively structured security forums are vital instruments for building trust, harmonizing defense policies, and enhancing collective security capabilities on a global scale.

By providing an empirical analysis rather than abstract generalizations, Defense Forum Effects offers a unique perspective valuable to policymakers, military professionals, and scholars interested in defense policy, military history, and politics.

More than eighty-five years after it ended in defeat for the Republicans and victory for the Nationalists headed by General Francisco Franco, the Spanish Civil War remains a subject of debate and contention. We live in a time of political polarization, with opposing sides holding entrenched and unalterable positions and War Without Mercy sheds light on the consequences of such circumstances. It also presents a detailed but concise picture of this turbulent and pivotal moment in European history.
The Spanish Civil War was a war of firsts: the first in which civilians were targeted, through the bombing of cities. It was also the first 'photogenic' war in history, the growth in photo-journalism bringing images of the fighting and of the huge number of refugees that were created by the conflict to the newspapers and newsreels of other European countries. New weapons, technologies and strategies were tried out, rehearsing for the increasingly inevitable war on European soil.
War Without Mercy examines the origins of this deadly conflagration which date back to the nineteenth century and which finds its causes in the issues of mass suffrage, social welfare reform, and land reform, as well as in the increasing tensions between urbanism and rural tradition. The course of the war is laid out, including descriptions of the major battles and incidents, incorporating details of the bombing of major cities, most harrowingly, of course, the bombing of civilians at Guernica, famously depicted in Pablo Picasso's painting of the atrocity. The reaction of the other nations of Europe is also examined - the 'non-intervention' promulgated by Great Britain and France, and the direct intervention of the fascist nations, Germany and Italy, in support of the Nationalist cause, support that took the form of troops, planes and armaments.

An exploration of the history, mythology, and evidence of those who traveled to pre-Columbian America.   Native groups have lived in the Americas for more than 10,000 years, but the voyages of Columbus surely did not bring the first visitors. Uncharted covers a range of cultures who seemingly visited the Americas long before Columbus, including Egyptians, Greeks, Celts, Vikings, as well as various people from Asia; and one large Chinese group who likely settled in the Americas in 100 BC. Wallace-Murphy and Martin delve into a wealth of evidence and stories, from potential Roman and Phoenician shipwrecks off the coast of South America to Celtic and Norse exploration of North America.   How did the Knights Templar influence the discovery of the New World? How did the Vikings navigate their way? What do the Sinclair family, the Rosslyn Chapel, and two Venetian brothers have to do with the discovery of a new continent? With source materials dating back through millennia, including very recent finds, this book will present a side of history still so readily dismissed by some. Columbus should be remembered, but remembered for the conquering tyrant he was. These other groups did not come to conquer, but to trade, explore, and escape.
