Sinossi

With all the intrinsic interest of Marco Polo’s Book it may perhaps be doubted if it would have continued to exercise such .fascination on many minds through successive generations were it not for the difficult questions which it suggests. It is a great book of puzzles, whilst our confidence in the man’s veracity is such that we feel certain every puzzle has a solution.
And such difficulties have not attached merely to the identification of places, the interpretation of outlandish terms, or the illustration of obscure customs; for strange entanglements have perplexed also the chief circumstances of the Traveller’s life and authorship. The time of the dictation of his Book and of the execution of his Last Will have been almost the only undisputed epochs in his biography. The year of his birth has been contested, and the date of his death has not been recorded; the critical occasion of his capture by the Genoese, to which we seem to owe the happy fact that he did not go down mute to the tomb of his fathers, has been made the subject of chronological difficulties; there are in the various texts of his story variations hard to account for; the very tongue in which it was written down has furnished a question, solved only in our own age, and in a most unexpected manner.

The deep divisions that came to define the Troubles in Northern Ireland have their roots in centuries of conflict, conquest, and colonization. The split between the largely Catholic Irish population and the Protestant settlers brought by British rule laid the groundwork for enduring hostility. This divide was not merely religious but deeply political and cultural, with Catholic nationalists largely advocating for a united Ireland, while Protestant unionists were loyal to the British crown and sought to remain part of the United Kingdom. These opposing identities hardened over time, especially in the north, where British colonization during the 16th and 17th centuries planted a Protestant presence in predominantly Catholic lands, most notably in the province of Ulster.
The 1921 partition of Ireland formalized the division, creating Northern Ireland as a separate political entity within the United Kingdom. While the south eventually became the Republic of Ireland, the north remained under British control with a Protestant-majority government. This arrangement was viewed by many Catholics as both illegitimate and oppressive, fostering a sense of exclusion and marginalization. Protestants, in turn, felt under siege by the threat of Irish republicanism and feared losing their political and cultural dominance. The new state was marked from the beginning by systemic discrimination against the Catholic minority in areas such as housing, employment, and political representation.
Tensions simmered for decades, occasionally flaring into violence, but it was in the 1960s that the situation began to unravel. Inspired by civil rights movements elsewhere, Northern Irish Catholics began organizing protests demanding equal treatment and an end to institutionalized bias. The state’s heavy-handed response to these demonstrations, combined with Protestant fears of losing control, only intensified the divide.

A “sweet indulgence for your mind, heart, and tastebuds”—now a major motion picture starring Yara Shahidi, Odessa A’zion, and Bette Midler (Molly Tarlov, MTV’s Awkward).   Meeting Mr. Right is never easy. And in a big city like Los Angeles, it’s even harder. So, after years of fruitless efforts at finding a soul mate, Audrey Shulman decided to take a different route to a man’s heart—through his sweet tooth. Whipping up a variety of sinfully delicious cakes, Audrey invaded the savage singles scene fully armed with butter, sugar, and frosting.  Sitting in Bars with Cake recounts Audrey’s year spent baking, bar-hopping, and offering slices of cake to men in the hope of finding a boyfriend (or, at the very least, a date).   With 35 inventive recipes, this charming book pairs each cake with a short essay and tongue-in-cheek lesson about picking up boys in bars.   “This delectable mix of encouragement, anecdote and cream-filling is more than enough reason to start baking and flirting.” —Winnie Holzman, creator of My So-Called Life   “This is a delightfully humble and enthralling tale about cake and bars and boys, but it’s really about life, and what it takes to get up every day and be the person you have always wanted to be.” —Tracy Moore, Jezebel

Papyrus, one of the most important inventions of ancient Egypt, was central to the development of writing and documentation in the ancient world. The history of papyrus dates back to the early dynastic periods of Egypt, around 3000 BCE, when the first examples of papyrus usage were recorded. This plant, which grew abundantly along the Nile River, was harvested for its stalks, which were then processed into sheets that served as a writing surface. The creation of papyrus revolutionized communication in the ancient world, providing a portable, durable, and practical alternative to other materials like stone or clay tablets.
The origins of papyrus as a writing material can be traced to the need for a flexible and lightweight medium that could be used for documentation, record-keeping, and artistic purposes. Ancient Egyptians discovered that the inner pith of the papyrus plant could be cut into strips and laid in a crisscross pattern, pressed together, and dried to form sheets. These sheets were then smoothed and polished, making them suitable for inscribing with hieroglyphs, hieratic script, or later, the demotic script. Over time, the process of papyrus production became more refined, and its use spread to neighboring regions, influencing other ancient civilizations.
Early uses of papyrus were predominantly for religious and administrative purposes. Royal decrees, religious texts, and tomb inscriptions were often written on papyrus scrolls. As Egyptian society advanced, the role of papyrus expanded to include personal letters, legal documents, and works of literature, cementing its place as the primary medium for writing in the ancient world. The papyrus scroll became the preferred format for long documents, with scrolls of varying lengths used to record everything from medical texts to astronomical observations.
