The rise of social media has reshaped the way people connect, communicate, and consume information. Over the past two decades, digital platforms have evolved from niche online communities to global networks that influence nearly every aspect of modern life. Social media is no longer just a tool for staying in touch with friends and family—it has become a powerful force in politics, business, entertainment, and culture. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding the impact of these platforms is essential.

Social media's rapid development can be traced back to the early days of the internet, when online forums and chat rooms allowed people to engage with others beyond geographical boundaries. The introduction of platforms like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter in the early 2000s marked the beginning of a new era of digital interaction. These sites enabled users to create personal profiles, share updates, and engage in real-time conversations, setting the stage for the social media boom that followed. Today, platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn serve diverse purposes, from entertainment and networking to news dissemination and activism.

The influence of social media extends far beyond personal connections. Businesses have embraced these platforms to market products, engage with customers, and build brand identities. Political campaigns rely on social media to reach voters and shape public opinion. Activists use digital platforms to mobilize communities and raise awareness about pressing social issues. At the same time, the widespread use of social media has introduced challenges, including concerns about data privacy, misinformation, cyberbullying, and the mental health effects of constant digital engagement.

Naturally, as technological advances and the creation of flying aircraft became realities, the sighting of UFOs increased, as did the interest in potential contact with aliens. While incidents like the one at Roswell led to conspiracies and a craze among those who insisted the government was hiding proof of extraterrestrials’ existence, governments across the world were actually secretly studying UFO sightings by the mid-20th century.
Given all of that, it was hardly groundbreaking for scientists in the 19th century to have plenty of heated debates about their imperfect knowledge of astronomy. One particular argument was over whether there was a hidden planet beyond Neptune, dubbed by the theory’s original proponent, Percival Lowell, as Planet X. When Pluto was discovered in 1930, at the start of the Great Depression, scientists originally thought this new world, in the extreme cold at the outer edge of the Solar System, would solve a decades-old mystery regarding the orbit of Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun. But soon, scientists realized that Pluto, at one point considered the 9th planet, was too small to explain the discrepancies found. Thus, some researchers began looking for the next planet, or Planet X.
Throughout our modern culture, “X” has remained the proverbial symbol of mystery. On the maps of buried pirate treasure, “X” is supposed to mark the spot where treasure seekers are to dig. In public schools, teenagers learn the utility of “X” as a variable in algebraic equations or as an axis in the Cartesian coordinate system. And “X” is also a Roman numeral symbolizing the quantity of 10, the highest value which can be counted on the fingers, and the next value beyond “9,” the largest single digit. The search for “Planet X,” then, is a quest rich with symbolism and mystery, rooted in history, astronomy, and astrology.

For millennia, humans have tried to understand and predict the weather. The Space Age helped usher in satellites and radar, while computers made it possible to plug all that data into complex equations that anticipated the atmosphere's future behavior. Now a new age of advances in forecasting is unfolding, driven by AI, drones, and satellites. The Internet of Things has turned everything from cellphones to cars into ubiquitous weather sensors. Equally significant are new efforts to understand how people respond to forecasts and warnings. Scientists and government officials are realizing that how people get their weather information, and how they use it, are crucial factors in the outcome of a catastrophic weather event.

Employing in-depth reporting on cutting edge science and technology, veteran journalist Thomas E. Weber takes us on a tour of how meteorologists, scientists, and officials track and prepare for major weather events. As climate change is altering our planet and making weather events more extreme, Weber introduces us to those on the front lines of weather preparation and prediction. We travel from coast-to-coast, to space and back, meeting TV meteorologists and storm chasers, city planners, backyard weatherman, and many others. Cloud Warriors will change the way you think about the weather—and the power of being able to see it coming.

The Rise of Quantum Computing -...

Quantum computing is one of the most exciting and transformative areas in modern technology. To understand what quantum computing is, it's important to first grasp the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, the science that underpins it. Classical computers, which most of us are familiar with, process information in binary form, using bits that can be either 0 or 1. However, quantum computing operates on the principles of quantum mechanics, where quantum bits, or qubits, can represent both 0 and 1 simultaneously due to a phenomenon called superposition.
In classical systems, information is processed in a linear and sequential manner. However, quantum computers harness the power of quantum mechanics to perform calculations in parallel. This is largely due to two key phenomena: superposition and entanglement. Superposition allows qubits to exist in multiple states at once, enabling quantum computers to perform complex computations much faster than classical computers. Entanglement, another quantum phenomenon, allows qubits that are entangled to influence each other, regardless of the distance between them, which further enhances the computational power of quantum systems.
The potential for quantum computing to revolutionize industries and fields like cryptography, medicine, and artificial intelligence is immense. For example, quantum algorithms can solve problems in minutes that would take classical computers millennia to complete. This ability to tackle complex problems more efficiently makes quantum computing a game-changer in the quest for faster and more powerful technologies.

    Owning the Sun - A People's...

Owning the Sun tells the story of one of the most contentious fights in human history: the legal right to control the production of lifesaving medicines. Medical science began as a discipline geared toward the betterment of all human life, but the merging of research with intellectual property and the rise of the pharmaceutical industry warped and eventually undermined its ethical foundations. Why does the US government fund the development of medical science in the name of the public, only to relinquish exclusive rights to drug companies, and how does such a system impoverish us, weaken our responses to global crises, and, as in the case of AIDS and COVID-19, put the world at risk?

Outlining how generations of public health and science advocates have attempted to hold the line against Big Pharma and their allies in government, Alexander Zaitchik's first-in-kind history documents the rise of medical monopoly in the United States and its subsequent globalization. From the controversial arrival of patent-wielding German drug firms in the late nineteenth century, to present-day coordination between industry and philanthropic organizations—including the influential Gates Foundation—that stymie international efforts to vaccinate the world against COVID-19, Owning the Sun tells one of the most important and least understood histories of our time.
