Sinopsis

The first three novels in the series, featuring a physician in the British countryside who knows all too well that death isn’t always from natural causes . . . This three-in-one murder mystery collection, written by a former practicing physician praised for her “great characters” (Peter Boon, author of Who Killed Miss Finch?), includes:Death by Appointment Dr. Cathy Moreland needs time to heal, having recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder while struggling with a painkiller habit. A village on Scotland’s coast promises respite, but after Cathy attempts to get an opiate prescription, things don’t go well—and when she discovers the body of a fellow doctor, her sanctuary is shattered.Murder & Malpractice Returning to work after battling mental health challenges, Dr. Cathy Moreland finds her surgery in the British countryside simmering, as usual, with tensions. One doctor struggles to keep up with the changes in the medical field; another, ambitious and aggressive, is romantically entangled with a nurse. The newest arrival, a pharmacist, seems very competent—but his behaviour is mysterious. When one of them dies after drinking a cup of coffee, the practice is thrown into chaos. Circumstances seem to point toward one partner—but Cathy intends to examine the evidence more closely . . .Deadly Diagnosis As Betty Scott is dying, she warns Dr. Cathy Moreland that danger lurks at the charity shop where she volunteers. But the only clue she provides is a reference to the now-derelict psychiatric hospital called Fernibanks. Then Betty is found dead—but not from natural causes—and Cathy is compelled to investigate . . .

A minor French official in Guinea must solve the case of a tourist found hanged from a sailboat in this “gem of a diplomatic thriller” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Having grown up in Romania, Aurel Timescu never quite fit in his native France. A former piano player with the disheveled air of a character from between the wars, nobody can understand how he got to be Consul. Now he’s taken a position in French Guinea, where he passes his time perspiring, drinking Tokay, and composing librettos. Until, that is, a vacationer is found hanging from the mast of a sailboat.

How did he end up dead, on a mast, on Aurel Timescu’s watch? Had his personal life been hanging by a thread? Was he hanging around waiting for love to be reciprocated? Had he been hanging out with the wrong crowd? Had he hung his hat on the peg of some quixotic dream?

A Prix Goncourt–winning author and former diplomat, Jean-Christophe Rufin brings Aurel to vivid life in a novel that “offers razor-sharp insights into cultural clashes in the former French colony . . . readers will be reminded of Georges Simenon, only better” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"The Gloria Scott", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It is chronologically the earliest case in Sherlock Holmes canon. This story is related mainly by Holmes rather than Watson, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his powers of deduction, having treated it as a mere hobby until this time. This is one of the two Sherlock Holmes stories in which a protagonist is haunted by an old acquaintance for an old crime. The other is "The Boscombe Valley Mystery". It is also one of his many stories that deal with the fate of characters who return to England after having spent time abroad in the colonies of the British Empire.
In his university days, Holmes spent a month with his friend, Victor Trevor, at Victor's father's estate in Norfolk. While there, Holmes amazed his host, Victor's father, who was a Justice of the Peace and a landowner. He had made his fortune in the goldfields in Australia. One of Holmes's deductions was that the elder Mr. Trevor was once connected with someone with the initials "J. A." whom he wanted to forget. His host then passed out on the table. Holmes had touched a sore spot, and possibly did not believe the old man's explanation once he had come back to himself that J. A. had been an old lover.

Job hunting is a deadly sport.
Deandra “Dee” Hendricks is settling into her new life in Axia. She’s got her trusty baby dragon, Havoc, by her side; is sharing an apartment with her best friend and roommate, Wendy; and even has her first pet-sitting client. Things are looking up!
Shortly after launching her new website, Dee receives an invitation to a pet-sitter happy hour where she meets Sarah, the owner of Axia’s largest pet-sitting operation. Other attendees include sole proprietors, like Dee, and a few of Sarah’s employees. Everyone is welcoming and willing to share advice—mainly to steer clear of their notorious fellow sitter, Lydia Monroe.
They accuse Lydia of everything—from magically manipulating her animal charges and poaching clients from Sarah to making false claims about possessing “zoolingual” abilities. The sticking point is Lydia’s questionable acquisition of a lucrative gig offered by Oleander Basnet, a yeti whose son needs one-on-one care. Sarah’s company fought hard for the opportunity, only to have yet another job snatched away by Lydia.
The peaceful get-together is interrupted when a late arrival informs the group that Lydia has been found murdered. Worse still, the time of death doesn’t exonerate anyone at the event. Dee fears she’s just shared discounted appetizers with a murderer.
Later that night, a job offer from Oleander hits Dee’s inbox. Dee’s wallet desperately wants her to take the job, but could there be someone in town so desperate to beat the competition that they murdered Lydia? And could Dee be next?
