Synopsis

When stargazer and amateur astronomer Neville Garth and his wife Lois decide to leave Sussex and retire to Spain for health reasons, the impact on the life of their daughter Nell and her growing family is enormous. As events unfold, can she mend the failing relationship with her mother, support her beloved father through the worst dilemma of his life and later help her own daughter through an agonizing trauma, all at a distance? And when faced with her greatest predicament yet, can Nell follow her conscience and overcome her doubts without sacrificing her own ambitions?
And in Ireland, how will Kathleen react to unexpected opportunities which affect not only her own life chances but those of the family to which she has become inextricably linked?
How will Bronte, at the age of fourteen recover from a cruel and spiteful episode which threatens her future?
Two families - poles apart - yet joined by the merest chance. Across several generations, the complexities of the various relationships are tested with surprising results.
Set against the background of Sussex, southwest Ireland and Spain, the story follows members of both families as they face unexpected challenges and the toughest of choices through tragedy, success, exploitation and personal triumphs, none of which could have been foretold in the stars.

The art of love is awakening to things you never knew about yourself with someone you thought was just a friend . . .

Nick Turner has always been the big, shy, silent type. He's always let his metalwork and blacksmithing skills speak for him. But now, as a widower with two small children to raise in the midst of the eccentric Hawthorne family and a sculpture that needs completing to make the deadline for a national competition, he knows he's in over his head.

Thank God for Baxter Hawthorne dropping into his life . . .

Bax Hawthorne is the black sheep of his family. He's an accountant in a sea of artists. But that doesn't mean he's not just as free-spirited and ambitious as his kin. The one thing he never thought he'd be, however, was a father. But when he's thrown into proximity with Nick and ends up helping to take care of his kids in a pinch, all that might change.

Nick could have sworn he was straight, but the closer he gets to Bax, the more he questions that.

Could one night of sparks between them end up forging a bond that brings the whole family together?

The fiction and poetry of Queer Little Nightmares reimagines monsters old and new through a queer lens, subverting the horror gaze to celebrate ideas and identities canonically feared in monster lit. Throughout history, monsters have appeared in popular culture as stand-ins for the non-conforming, the marginalized of society. Pushed into the shadows as objects of fear, revulsion, and hostility, these characters have long conjured fascination and self-identification in the LGBTQ+ community, and over time, monsters have become queer icons.
In Queer Little Nightmares, creatures of myth and folklore seek belonging and intimate connection, cryptids challenge their outcast status, and classic movie monsters explore the experience of coming into queerness. The characters in these stories and poems — the Minotaur camouflaged in a crowd of cosplayers, a pubescent werewolf, a Hindu revenant waiting to reunite with her lover, a tender-hearted kaiju, a lagoon creature aching for the swimmers above him, a ghost of Pride past — relish their new sparkle in the spotlight. Pushing against tropes that have historically been used to demonize, the queer creators of this collection instead ask: What does it mean to be (and to love) a monster?
Contributors include Amber Dawn, David Demchuk, Hiromi Goto, jaye simpson, Eddy Boudel Tan, Matthew J. Trafford, and Kai Cheng Thom.
