Synopsis

He preached to thousands. Inspired heretics to return to the Church. Performed miracles. Lived in deepest intimacy with Christ.
The story of Saint Anthony of Padua has been told many times. But never like this.
In this compelling biography, Madeline Nugent, CFP, seamlessly unites historical facts with engaging narrative that reads like a novel. She draws on primary sources, scholarly research, time spent in Italy, and interviews with Franciscan experts to vividly present the world of Saint Anthony through the eyes of those who knew him best—and through the words of Anthony himself.

The life story of Jesus of Nazareth, considered by billions of Christians to be the Messiah prophesized in the Old Testament of the Bible, is perhaps the most famous in history. Described in detail in the New Testament, Jesus comes from both divine yet humble roots, born in a manger to a young woman, but in time he leads a fervent following as tales of his miracles spread across the Holy Land. The crucifixion and resurrection that follow create the climactic resolution of Jesus’ life story and cement his status as the Christ, at least in the eyes of the burgeoning religious movement that would sweep across the region in the coming decades. An anonymous writer would compose the first gospel, Mark, and the major theme would be the way of Jesus to his death. His followers, whose movement would originally be called "the way,” would also bring about a new religion that has lasted 20 centuries, and while it is focused on the figure of Jesus, the rural man of Israel who started it all, the historical Jesus was gradually enshrined under layers of sermons, chants, legends and philosophies that would be alien to Jews in Jesus’s day. Like ideological strata, they covered the historical facts, obscuring the Jesus of history under the Christ of faith.
It goes without saying that Judas is an interesting character in the development of the salvation history. His person, his act of betrayal and even his replacement were predicted by the Old Testament prophets, which some Biblical scholars take as evidence that Judas was doomed from the beginning to be the betrayer and had no choice. But by taking a closer look at the history, the reader will see several points along the way, even up to the moment of the final kiss, in which Jesus gave Judas the opportunity to repent. God’s plan was going to be fulfilled, and God was going to use an individual to bring about the betrayal of Jesus,

All at Sea - A Memoir

All at Sea describes the career of a ship captain and salvage master from the time when he joined his first vessel to his present status as a marine consultant in Hong Kong. He writes of the remarkable changes he has seen and experienced in a career which has spanned more than half a century. By turns amusing and thought-provoking, this is an enjoyable tale of a most interesting life.
"[Alan] has done readers a service by putting on record so many of his experiences in such a charming & accessible manner. ... those who are interested in recent maritime practice should ... find within its pages much to intrigue & delight them. / Alan Loynd joined the Swire Group in 1976, and worked for businesses within it for most of thirty years.... it is both an honour and a pleasure to commend this volume to almost any curious & enthusiastic reader.”—Barnaby Swire. Chairman, the Swire Group
"A well thought through, beautifully written account of an interesting life.... I honestly could not put this down! Alan writes exceptionally well, with a delightful turn of phrase and a nice dry wit. His shrewd and sympathetic insights into the people of southern China are a particular pleasure. You pick up this book expecting a seafarer’s memoir - Devon schoolboy to CEO - and you get a handbook to modern Hong Kong, a bonus sketch of the Queen and Prince Philip visiting the tiny and remote island nation of Tuvalu, and an insight into modern salvage techniques.... Highly recommended."—Andrew Craig-Bennett, Amazon UK, 29 July 2021.
"A riveting read.... This is a quite exceptional account of a life at sea, covering a vast range of roles and adventures. It is beautifully written, and Alan Loynd’s (very) dry sense of humour shines through it all. I am a compulsive reader of mariners’ memoirs, and this is one of the very best."

In this searing and uplifting memoir, a young Black queer woman fresh out of college adopts her baby brother after their incarcerated mother dies, determined to create the kind of family she never had. Growing up, Nikkya Hargrove’s mother was in and out of prison. Hargrove, one of the 5 million children dealing with the effects of an incarcerated parent, spent a good portion of her childhood in prison visiting rooms. After her baby brother was born, Hargrove decided to fight for custody–even though she had only just graduated college. We see how she is subjected to preconceived notions that she, a Black, queer, young woman, cannot handle the responsibility. She shares about the shame she feels accepting food stamps, her family’s reaction to her coming out, and the joy she experiences when she meets the woman who will become her wife. Whether she’s clashing with her brother's biological father or battling for Jonathan’s education rights after he’s diagnosed with ADHD and autism, this is a woman who won’t give up.     Hargrove’s memoir picks up where Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy left off, exploring generational trauma and pulling back the curtain on family court and poverty in America. Moving and inspiring, Mama is an ode to motherhood and identity, to never giving up, and to finding strength in family and community.

Scotland would never be the same again.
