  The creatures inhabiting the water, air, and earth were held in veneration by all races of antiquity. Realizing that visible bodies are only symbols of invisible forces, the ancients worshiped the Divine Power through the lower kingdoms of Nature, because those less evolved and more simply constituted creatures responded most readily to the creative impulses of the gods. The sages of old studied living things to a point of realization that God is most perfectly understood through a knowledge of His supreme handiwork--animate and inanimate Nature. 
  Every existing creature manifests some aspect of the intelligence or power of the Eternal One, who can never be known save through a study and appreciation of His numbered but inconceivable parts.   For the French, and those who study their history, Versailles is a symbol of, as Charles Dickens once put it, “the best of times…the worst of times.” It was here that the Sun King, Louis XIV, built a palace worthy of a great nation during a time when peace was, at best, short-lived. It was at Versailles that Russian Tsar Peter the Great studied the palace’s architecture and gardens so that he could recreate them in his home country. Indeed, the greatest minds and artistic geniuses of the later stages of the Renaissance came to Versailles to build and paint, and it was here that Madame de Pompadour and her successor, Madame du Barry, used their wit and beauty to charm a king into doing their bidding. 
  	France, like all European countries, has had its fair share of palaces over time, but none suffered the rise and fall of fortune like the Tuileries. Built by a widow with a flair for architecture, it grew for more than a decade, along with the royal family that it housed. Then, during the French Revolution, it fell from grace with that family and even became a sight of execution, its famous gardens providing the background for the infamous guillotine.  
  	The Louvre's very name conjures up scenes of art and elegance, and of long halls filled with beauty and people strolling through them whispering quietly among themselves about the glories they are witnessing. Even those who have never been to the Louvre know some of its most prized possessions, from ancient statues to Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”. As the world’s largest museum, the Louvre is unquestionably the cultural highpoint of Paris, a city that has long been considered the cultural center of Europe.

  Lawrence Joseph Scott was born in 1910 in Saskatchewan, Canada. His family made their way south and ended up in Alabama. In 1924, having finished 8th grade at the age of 14, L.J. lied about his age and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. 
  Sometime in the 1930s, L.J. was stationed in Peking, China. As a member of the famous China Marines, he performed his duties on horseback. For a period of time, his commanding officer was Captain Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, one of the most famous and decorated U.S. Marines. Years later, L.J. was transferred to Pearl Harbor, along with his wife, Cliz. They were there on December 7th, 1941. 
  After WWII ended, he retired to El Cajon, California. Later in life, L.J. took advantage of the G.I. Bill and attended Grossmont College, where he graduated Valedictorian with a G.P.A. of 4.0. He died in 1985 and was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. He is survived by his son Robert, and his daughters Bonnie and Sandra
