Beschreibung

Festival Origins explores the historical and religious roots of seasonal festivals, revealing how these celebrations are deeply intertwined with mythology and ancient civilizations. It examines how early societies marked time, honored deities, and maintained social order through rituals, offering a factual perspective on festival development. Many festivals have astronomical origins, linked to solstices and equinoxes, while others find their basis in agricultural cycles like planting and harvesting. The book argues that festivals are not merely spontaneous traditions but carefully constructed events that reinforce social structures.

Examining ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, it analyzes historical development and religious significance, drawing on archaeological records and ancient texts. The book progresses by first introducing seasonal time, then examining specific festivals across different regions, and finally tracing their evolution over time. By connecting history, religious studies, and anthropology, Festival Origins provides a comprehensive understanding of these celebrations. Its interdisciplinary approach and accessible tone make it valuable for anyone interested in cultural identity, ritual, or the history of religion. This exploration fosters a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and encourages critical reflection on the meaning and purpose of festivals today.

John Alexander Dowie (1847-1907) was a Scottish evangelist and faith healer who came to San Francisco in 1888 and built up a following by performing faith healing across the state. Later, Dowie gained fame by renting property adjacent to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. There he staged elaborate "divine healings" in front of large audiences.
In 1900 he announced the founding the city of Zion, 40 miles from Chicago, where he owned all the property personally. He established a range of businesses and healing homes and a large tabernacle. Dowie was for total reliance on divine healing and against the use of all forms of medicine. Dowie was a forerunner of Pentecostalism, and many of his followers became influential figures in the early 20th century revival.

Accessible Guide from 9Marks Equips Believers to Steward Their God-Given Authority
In every position of power—from executives and world leaders to church elders and parents—lies the potential for life-giving leadership or destructive corruption. Driven by sinful pride or opportunism, many people abuse their God-given authority, harming the ones they're called to lead and contributing to a skeptical attitude toward leadership. The answer to bad authority, however, is not no authority, but good authority—the kind that, according to Scripture, causes those under it to flourish.
In this compelling guide from 9Marks, Jonathan Leeman shows that authority, done biblically, is not only good, but is essential to human flourishing. Through Scripture and many first-hand stories, he presents 5 attributes of positive authority and warns against sinfulness that corrupts leadership. Pointing to Jesus as the ultimate model of good authority, Leeman equips listeners to pursue godly influence in their personal and professional lives.

    - Applicable: Challenges listeners to identify weaknesses in their own leadership style and offers 5 attributes of godly authority
    - Engaging: Filled with compelling stories that illustrate key points
    - A Great Resource for Pastors, Employers, Officers, and Parents: Explains how to practice godly authority in church, at home, and in the workplace

Knowing, loving, and worshiping God is the call and privilege of every disciple of Jesus. Because all Christians are part of his royal priesthood, theology is not just for those teaching in the academy or serving in ministry vocations. Theology proper centers on God, exploring his existence, his divine nature, his Persons, and his attributes. In this book you will find an overview of these truths in the doctrine of God as well as other great truths in the doctrine of divine revelation. You are not simply setting out on a journey toward deeper knowledge. If theological study only results in knowing abstract truths about God, then we have not done theology well. Right theology invariably leads to right living and right worship, and this is our ultimate goal in these books and in this life. God is the first volume of a three-part series entitled Theology for Every Person. The other volumes will include God’s Word to the World, which considers God in Christ and his works of creation, humanity, and redemption, and God’s Work in the World, which explores God the Holy Spirit and the divine works of salvation, the church, and the end.

Happily Jewish blows the dust off texts formerly inaccessible to anyone but Orthodox Jews and offers a wealth of guidance about how to live a more meaningful, spiritual, and connected life.

Judaism isn't just a set of religious laws and principles. It's a way of thinking about the meaning of life. You'll find men and women sharing the wisdom of the ages, and often their ideas were extremely controversial at the time they first wrote them. Some were so controversial that their authors were exiled or even excommunicated. Now, they're all here in one fun and accessible volume that will give you a new outlook on life—a new level of happiness and joy.

This book contains twenty sets of explosive, life-changing ideas and philosophies about how to maximize your happiness, joy, and how you find meaning in life. If you're Jewish, these ideas (traditionally known only to those in the Orthodox world) are your heritage. They already belong to you. It's time to "take delivery" of what's already yours and learn the secrets of Jewish wisdom, character, and yes, survival. These concepts go back to the very creation of the Torah and relate to everything from being the best possible person we can be to understanding Jewish concepts of sex and intimacy. It's all here—waiting to be unpacked and put to use—in author Michael Levin's Happily Jewish.

Living Out Real Faith in the Book of James with N. T. Wright
In every generation of the church, there are people who just glide along, seeming to enjoy what they hear in church but without it making any real difference in their lives. James faced exactly the same problem in the very first generation. It's not surprising that making sure faith is the real thing by translating belief into action is near the heart of his message.
That kind of faith, he explains, is the faith that matters, the faith that justifies, the faith that saves. We need that kind of faith today. These nine studies on James's impassioned New Testament letter will help you live out a faith that makes a difference.
    This nine-session Bible study features:

    - An introduction to the book of James
    - Commentary notes on difficult passages
    - Discussion questions to inspire group conversation
    - A leader's guide and suggestions for getting the most out of the study
