Synopsis

In "The Eruption of Vesuvius in 1872," Luigi Palmieri presents a meticulous account of one of the most significant natural disasters of the 19th century. Written in a scientific yet evocative prose, the book interweaves first-hand observations with detailed geological analysis, capturing the awe and terror of the eruption that shook the region. Palmieri's unique narrative style bridges the gap between literature and scientific inquiry, reflecting the burgeoning fields of volcanology and disaster studies throughout the era, while also drawing upon historical accounts of Vesuvius that had intrigued writers and scientists alike. Luigi Palmieri, a prominent Italian meteorologist and geologist, dedicated much of his career to the fiery mountain that loomed near his hometown. His firsthand experience of the 1872 eruption, combined with a robust background in scientific research, culminated in this essential work. Palmieri's commitment to advancing the understanding of volcanic activity is evident in his detailed documentation, making him a pivotal figure in the history of earth sciences in Italy. This book is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of both natural disasters and historical geology. Palmieri's narrative not only serves as a scientific report but also as a poignant reminder of nature's power. Readers will find themselves drawn into the vivid descriptions and insightful commentary that have contributed to its lasting significance in the academic study of volcanology.

Over billions of years of evolution, animals have become increasingly sophisticated and increasingly sentient. In the process, they evolved emotions, which helped improve their odds of survival in complex situations. These emotions were, at first, purely internal. But at some point, social animals began expressing their emotions, in increasingly dramatic ways. These emotional expressions could accurately reflect internal emotions (smiling to express happiness)—or they could be quite different (smiling to cover up that you're actually furious, but can't tell your boss that).

Why did once-stone-faced animals evolve to be so emotionally expressive—to be us? The answer, as evolutionary neurobiologist Mark Changizi and mathematician Tim Barber reveal, is that emotional expressions are our first and most important language—one that allows us, as social animals, to engage in highly sophisticated communications and negotiations.

Expressly Human introduces an original theory that explains, from first principles, how the broad range of emotional expressions evolved, and provides a Rosetta Stone for human communication. It will revolutionize the way you see every social interaction, from deciding who gets the last slice of pizza to multimillion-dollar business negotiations, and change your definition of what makes us human.

    The Antichrist

The Antichrist is a book by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, originally published in 1895. Although it was written in 1888, its controversial content made Franz Overbeck and Heinrich Köselitz delay its publication, along with Ecce Homo. The German title can be translated into English as either The Anti-Christ or The Anti-Christian, depending on how the German word Christ is translated.
Nietzsche claimed in the foreword to have written the book for a very limited readership. In order to understand the book, he asserted that the reader "...must be honest in intellectual matters to the point of hardness to so much as endure my seriousness, my passion." The audience should be above politics and nationalism. Also, the usefulness or harmfulness of truth should not be a concern. Characteristics such as "strength which prefers questions for which no one today is sufficiently daring; courage for the forbidden" are also needed. He disdained all other readers.

The etymology of the word fail is derived from the French word faillir, which means “almost to do.” Faillir is derived from the Latin word fallere, which means to deceive or lead into error. These definitions imply that when people fail, they do not follow through with their intentions, and those who believed that they would be in some way deceived.
People who experience failure can feel a sense of shame. This emotional response can cause them to suppress their feelings, deflect the responsibility of the failure, neglect to learn from the valuable lessons, and thwart the possibility for future success.
As Winston Churchill so eloquently said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
