  Hong Kong, a former British colony handed back to China in 1997, has long been a symbol of political and economic success. Its unique status under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework promised a high degree of autonomy, preserving its freedoms and capitalist economy for 50 years after the handover. However, in recent years, this promise has been put to the test, as Beijing's increasing influence over the region has sparked widespread protests and growing unrest. These protests, driven by a desire to protect Hong Kong’s democracy and autonomy, have become a focal point for global discussions about civil liberties, governance, and the future of one of Asia’s most vibrant cities. 
  The roots of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movements can be traced back to the 1997 handover and the promises of autonomy that accompanied it. Despite these promises, many in Hong Kong have felt that their political freedoms and rights are being steadily eroded. In response, various pro-democracy movements have emerged over the years, with the youth of the city playing a significant role in these campaigns. Their efforts have challenged not only local authorities but also the central government in Beijing, which has worked to tighten its control over the city in ways that many see as incompatible with Hong Kong’s unique status. 
  The most significant of these movements has been the series of protests that have swept across Hong Kong in the past decade. The 2014 Umbrella Movement, a response to proposed electoral reforms, marked a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s struggle for democracy. It demonstrated the growing dissatisfaction with Beijing's influence and the increasing willingness of Hong Kong citizens to take to the streets in protest. Yet, it was the 2019 Anti-Extradition Bill protests that would bring the issue of Hong Kong's autonomy to the world stage.

  Growing up in the shadow of Hollywood, the gay sons of immigrants featured in Brown and Gay in LA could not have felt further removed from a world where queerness was accepted and celebrated. Instead, the men profiled here maneuver through family and friendship circles where masculinity dominates, gay sexuality is unspoken, and heterosexuality is strictly enforced. For these men, the path to sexual freedom often involves chasing the dreams while resisting the expectations of their immigrant parents—and finding community in each other. 
   
  Ocampo also details his own story of reconciling his queer Filipino American identity and those of men like him. He shows what it was like for these young men to grow up gay in an immigrant family, to be the one gay person in their school and ethnic community, and to be a person of color in predominantly White gay spaces.   On February 1, the Columbia was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:16. Only a few members of the press were present to watch the landing - this was, after all, supposed to be a routine return from a routine mission, the 113th for the shuttle program and the 28th for Columbia, one of the oldest Space Shuttles. 
  Reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere is always the most dangerous part of any space mission. The intense heat generated as a spacecraft enters the thin upper atmosphere at immense speed can be potentially lethal, but the shuttle was designed to deal with this heat, and Columbia had successfully done it 27 times in the past. For the five men and two women on board and the members of the press present, everything seemed normal, but there was a measure of concern among those in the ground control team. The team was aware that Columbia had possibly suffered damage to the thermal tiles forming the heat shield on one wing soon after liftoff, but no one knew how extensive the damage was or even if it existed at all. There was also some disagreement about how serious it might be - some on the ground were concerned this might compromise the shuttle wing’s ability to resist the heat of reentry, while others were sure it was a minor issue that would have no serious impact on the mission. Videos of the launch had been exhaustively reviewed by engineers on the ground, but it was impossible to be certain of the precise level of damage to the heat shielding on the underside and leading edge of the wing.  
  There was no agreement on what should or could be done, so one thing was universally agreed upon: the crew would not be informed of the problem. There was nothing they could do to make repairs and no way to avoid reentry.

Set in the heartland of Lawrence, Kansas, the film depicted the events before, during, and after a Soviet nuclear attack with vivid scenes of the post-apocalyptic hellscape that would follow. The film was viewed by over 100 million Americans and remains the highest rated TV movie in history. 
   
   
   
  The path to primetime for The Day After proved nearly as treacherous as the film's narrative. Battles ensued behind the scenes at the network, between the network and the filmmakers. But these skirmishes pale in comparison to the culture wars triggered by the film in the press, alongside a growing Nuclear Freeze movement, and from a united, pro-nuclear Right. Once efforts to alter the script failed, the White House conducted a full-throttled propaganda campaign to hijack the film's message. 
   
   
   
  Apocalypse Television features a dramatic insider's account of the making of and backlash against The Day After. No other book has told this story in similar fashion, venturing behind-the-scenes of the programming and news divisions at ABC, the backlash from the conservative movement and Religious Right, the challenges encountered by the film's production team, and the experiences of the citizens of Lawrence, Kansas, where the film was set and shot.
