Beschreibung

Ray lives to swim. He is within touching distance of international glory and a life-changing sponsorship deal. But everything changes when performance-enhancing drugs are discovered in his swimming club's refrigerator.
As tensions run high, Ray's brother wants them destroyed, his coach wants to call the authorities, his ex-girlfriend doesn't want to know, and Ray wants the drugs back.
A thriller played at the breakneck pace of an Olympic sprint, Lucas Hnath's play Red Speedo tackles the unforgiving weight of success in a world where the only crime is getting caught.
This sharp and stylish play was first performed at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016. It received its UK premiere at the Orange Tree Theatre, London, in 2024, in a co-production with David Adkin. It was directed by Matthew Dunster and starred Finn Cole.

Winner of the 2023 Aryamati Collection Competition.
Through visceral and vulnerable poetry, Ricky Ray meditates on the pain and gratitude that arise from a keenly felt awareness of our fleeting existence. Recognizing his humanity as a facet of natural processes, Ricky measures the ache of living in a disabled body against the joy of \'being lived\' by the places he inhabits. As we accompany him and his soul dog, Addie, through the scenic woodlands of New England, the concrete jungle of Manhattan, and the swamps of the Deep South, the lines between humans, animals and nature begin to blur and move in concert. Shifting between forms both physical and elemental, we read of an existence lived not 'upon / but as one' with the Earth, \'whose being we are throughout and beyond our brief sojourn as human\'. At the heart of this collection is the transformative experience of Ricky's life with an old brown dog, which teaches that soul isn't merely something we possess—it's an animacy deeply shared.

Two short fragments: an unfinished and a lost play. A Florentine Tragedy, left in a taxi (not a handbag), is Wilde’s most successful attempt at tragedy – intense and domestic, with surprising depth of characterisation. It was adapted into an opera by the Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky in 1917. La Sainte Courtisane, or The Woman Covered in Jewels explores one of Wilde’s great idées fixes: the paradox of religious hedonism, pagan piety. Both plays, Wildean to their core, revel in the profound sadness that is the fruit of the conflict between fidelity and forbidden love. Written towards the end of his tragic life, these fragments give us a glimpse of a genius at his best: visceral, passionate, personal, poetic. "This book has shaped this piece of text [ITSELF] already—by neighbouring it (& in my mind) co-opted it, made it something other than an essay—part of SWANSEA culture—We obey these local rules slavishly—and fail to exploit them—[NOT SURE WHAT I'M ON ABOUT HERE]"Authorial violence: Swansea Automatic was published 10 years ago, around the last year of the snake to 0 acclaim except for by those who read it of course. I even did a little residency, which was more like squatting ina little shop on the High Street, Swansea but as time has passed, I came to consider this one of my few, if not only book that can boast the synthesis of my extreme late modernist tendencies and some attempt to fit into the aesthetic of popular fiction. nonetheless it doesn't pull too many punches, it's comedy, it's poetry, it's deconstructed pros,e even philosophy, textual analysis, cynghanedd, and more.Spinning Around the dirty first person narrative is the self-referential Vonegut and recycled psychogeographic of the Fiery Elephant of Johnson, Brooke-Rose, and Sinclair. An attempt to exercise the Demon of Swansea from my formative years. But actually set in North Wales just as much. Swansea is a dream city that could just as easily be London, Glasgow, Belfast, Lublin or Cairo...A second bite the cherry: a second edition is occurring, along with the audiobook and kindle edition and the album (movie!), hopefully generatinga hammer blow on the collective unconscious of our post-media universe. Swansea Automatic justifies itself to me because 2015 was also the very last gasp of the fin de siècle of the apocalyptic contemporary, where the post beats, post flaneur metanarratives where still just about alive. It's rare for me to look back, but I had an idea this one could be a cult book somehow. Help it become so and consume as such, cultishly.

A new collection of poetry from an American literary legend, her first in twenty-five years
Joyce Carol Oates is one of our most insightful observers of the human heart and mind, and, with her acute social consciousness, one of the most insistent and inspired witnesses of a shared American history.
Oates is perhaps best known for her prodigious output of novels and short stories, many of which have become contemporary classics. However, Oates has also always been a faithful writer of poetry. American Melancholy showcases some of her finest work of the last few decades.
Covering subjects big and small, and written in an immediate and engaging style, this collection touches on both the personal and political. Loss, love, and memory are investigated, along with the upheavals of our modern age, the reality of our current predicaments, and the ravages of poverty, racism, and social unrest. Oates skillfully writes characters ranging from a former doctor at a Chinese People’s Liberation Army hospital to Little Albert, a six-month-old infant who took part in a famous study that revealed evidence of classical conditioning in human beings.
