Beschreibung

Tolkien For Beginners will introduce the reader to the multilayered depth and breadth of Tolkien’s tales of Middle-earth, what critics, following Tolkien’s lead, refer to collectively as his legendarium. J.R.R. Tolkien sweeps us away to a distant time and place that is at the same time, our own time and place. He takes us to a world where difficult choices must be made and are made, where character is defined by those choices, and where redemption is possible though not always embraced. The Lord of the Rings taps a deep root in the human psyche. There is much death, destruction, and defeat in Tolkien’s world, but there is even more friendship, courage, and hope. What one remembers when one finishes reading The Lord of the Rings is not the vice of the villains, as strong and as well drawn as it is, but the virtue that empowers the heroes to resist it, even at the cost of their own lives. It will be the goal of Tolkien For Beginners to introduce the reader to the multilayered depth and breadth of Tolkien’s tales of Middle-earth. To do justice to the full dimensions of that legendarium, author Louis Markos will speak in two voices: that of the storyteller who loves the stories he tells and that of the critic who seeks to identify and explicate key themes from those stories. In his telling and analysis, he will treat the legendarium both as a collection of secondary-world myths with their own integrity and as a reflection of Tolkien’s Catholic worldview.

In the 1930s, the Federal Writers' Project sent mostly anonymous writers into the depths of Florida to reveal its splendor to the world. The FWP and the State of Florida jointly published the results as Florida: A Guide to the Southernmost State, which included twenty-two driving tours of the state's main roads. Retracing the original routes in the Guide, Cathy Salustri rekindles our notions of paradise by bringing a modern eye to the historic travelogues.

Salustri's 5,000-mile road trip reveals a patchwork quilt of Florida cultures. The journey begins on US 98, heading west toward the Florida/Alabama state line, where coastal towns dot the roadway. Along US 17, she stops at Florida's oldest diner and visits a collection of springs interconnected by underwater mazes tumbling through white spongy limestone, before stopping in Arcadia, where men still bring cattle to auction.

Woven through these journeys are nuggets of history, environmental debates about Florida's future, and a narrative that combines humor with a strong affection for an oft-maligned state.

Today, Salustri urges, tourists need a new nudge to get off the interstates or away from Disney in order to discover the real Florida.

A gently powerful memoir about deepening your relationship with your homeland.

For the first time in more than twenty-five years, Greg Sarris—whose novels are esteemed alongside those of Louise Erdrich and Stephen Graham Jones—presents a book about his own life. In Becoming Story he asks: What does it mean to be truly connected to the place you call home—to walk where innumerable generations of your ancestors have walked? And what does it mean when you dedicate your life to making that connection even deeper? Moving between his childhood and the present day, Sarris creates a kaleidoscopic narrative about the forces that shaped his early years and his eventual work as a tribal leader. He considers the deep past, historical traumas, and possible futures of his homeland. His acclaimed storytelling skills are in top form here, and he charts his journey in prose that is humorous, searching, and profound. Described as "jewellike" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Becoming Story is also a gently powerful guide in the art of belonging to the place where you live.

The body is central to our sense of identity. Bodily awareness, says scientist-writer Moheb Costandi, is key to self-consciousness. In Body Am I, Costandi examines how the brain perceives the body, how that perception translates into our conscious experience of the body, and how that experience contributes to our sense of self. Along the way, he explores what can happen when the mechanisms of bodily awareness are disturbed, leading to such phenomena as phantom limbs, alien hands, and amputee fetishes.

Costandi explains that the brain generates maps and models of the body that guide how we perceive and use it, and that these maps and models are repeatedly modified and reconstructed. Drawing on recent bodily awareness research, the new science of self-consciousness, and historical milestones in neurology, he describes a range of psychiatric and neurological disorders that result when body and brain are out of sync, including not only the well-known phantom limb syndrome but also phantom breast and phantom penis syndromes; body integrity identity disorder, which compels a person to disown and then amputate a healthy arm or leg; and such eating disorders as anorexia.

Wide-ranging and meticulously researched, Body Am I offers new insight into self-consciousness by describing it in terms of bodily awareness.

    Parenting Without Chaos -...

Parenting was never meant to feel like constant crisis management.
Yet for many parents, daily life is filled with raised voices, power struggles, guilt, exhaustion, and the lingering fear that they are somehow getting it wrong. Mornings begin in a rush, evenings end in frustration, and in between is a cycle of correcting, negotiating, apologizing, and starting over again. Love is present—but so is chaos.
Parenting Without Chaos was written for parents who are tired of surviving and ready to start leading their homes with calm, clarity, and confidence.
This book does not promise perfect children or silent households. What it offers instead is something far more realistic and powerful: a new way of thinking about parenting—one that replaces reactivity with intention, control with connection, and constant conflict with steady guidance.
Chaos in parenting is rarely caused by children alone. More often, it grows from uncertainty, unexamined habits, and unrealistic expectations passed down from generation to generation. Many parents were never taught how to regulate their own emotions, set firm but loving boundaries, or discipline without anger. As a result, they parent from stress instead of strategy.
Clinton Greene challenges the idea that parenting must be loud, overwhelming, or emotionally draining to be effective. Drawing from real-life experiences, behavioral insight, and practical observation, he shows how calm leadership—not force—is the foundation of a healthy family environment.
At its core, Parenting Without Chaos is about reclaiming peace in the home—not by controlling children, but by mastering yourself. When parents change the way they show up, children respond differently. Homes become calmer. Relationships strengthen. Trust grows.
