Synopsis

In 'Thirty Years a Slave & Narrative of the Life of J.D. Green, A Runaway Slave,' readers are presented with a profoundly impactful collection that bridges distinct yet converging narratives of resilience, injustice, and the pursuit of freedom within the ante- and postbellum periods in American history. The anthology juxtaposes two pivotal personal histories, offering a rare glimpse into the literary expression of enslavement and escape, unified by a shared quest for liberty and dignity against the backdrop of systemic oppression. The diverseness in their storytelling – one a methodical recount of three decades of enforced servitude, the other a dramatic escape narrative – encapsulates the complex fabric of African American resistance narratives, standing as testament to the indomitable human spirit. The contributing authors, Louis Hughes and Jacob D. Green, bring forth a visceral, firsthand account of their experiences, rooted deeply in the historical and cultural contexts of their times. These narratives not only contribute to the understanding of the slave narrative genre but also offer crucial insights into the socio-economic conditions and the personal ramifications of slavery in America. Their accounts resonate with themes of perseverance, the universality of the desire for freedom, and the profound impact of literacy and self-expression in the face of adversity. This collection is an indispensable addition to the library of those who seek to comprehend the multifaceted reality of slavery through the lens of those who endured it. It not only serves as an educational tool but also as a profound reminder of the complexities of the human condition, encouraging a deeper exploration into the narratives that have shaped America's history and continue to influence discussions on race, identity, and freedom.

“Brings transparency, honesty, humor, and hope to spouses and family members caring for loved ones with cancer . . . a must-read.” —Shelly Beach, Christy Award-winning author of Ambushed By Grace: Help & Hope on the Caregiving Journey

Initially, after David’s diagnosis, I would cringe when I read books or articles by cancer survivors who stated that cancer had been a gift in their lives. How could all that David endured be viewed as a gift? The invasive surgery, the weeks of chemotherapy and radiation: a gift? Yet, after the cancer, David would often reach for my hand and say, “If it is cancer that is responsible for our new relationship, then it was all worth it.” And I’d reluctantly agree that cancer had been a gift in our lives. We’d both seen the other alternative: patients and survivors who had become bitter and angry, and neither one of us wanted to become that.

After Mary Potter Kenyon’s husband, David, was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2006, she would serve as his companion during Wednesday chemotherapy treatments, Mary began journaling about their experience as a couple and parents of young children as they navigated the labyrinth of cancer. It soon dawned on her that between working and raising a large family, the two had somehow lost touch with each other over the years—and that things were about to change. Chemo-Therapist: How Cancer Cured a Marriage is a moving and inspiring testimonial of a relationship renewed by the shared experience of a life-threatening illness.

In the 1920s, the burgeoning movie industry was starting to come into its own, and virtually no actor was as famous – or infamous – as John Barrymore. Like many other film stars his age, Barrymore’s career had started in other forms of entertainment, in his case theater, and by the time movies were becoming popular, Barrymore was one of the world’s foremost Shakespearean actors. After standout performances in productions of Richard III and Hamlet, Barrymore transitioned for a time to working on films, including Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Sherlock Holmes (1922) and The Sea Beast (1926). His career would not be hampered by the end of the silent film era either, and he would continue to star in movies throughout the 1930s, including in critically acclaimed films like Grand Hotel (1932), Twentieth Century (1934) and Midnight (1939).
For a time, Barrymore was one of the most popular actors of the day, but more than 75 years after his death, he is likely better remembered more for his family lineage and his contributions to pop culture, voluntarily and involuntarily. Barrymore hailed from an acting family, and he would become the patriarch whose descendants continued to be acclaimed actors, most recently his granddaughter Drew Barrymore. But while that might be his most tangential legacy in the 21st century, Barrymore’s personal life continues to draw interest, from his many marriages and paramours to the substance abuse that was common knowledge by the end of his life. Barrymore even tried to play to his reputation and get in on the joke, often taking on roles that served as parodies of his own outlandish behavior. In a self-deprecating reference to his love life, he once joked, “I am thinking of taking a fifth wife. Why not? Solomon had a thousand wives and he is a synonym for wisdom.”

A revealing memoir of a family and a “wrenching journey into deafness from the standpoint of a mother, a wife, a daughter, a philosopher, and a Jew” (Ilan Stavans, author of On Borrowed Words: A Memoir of Language).   When her daughters were born deaf, Jennifer Rosner was stunned. Then she discovered a hidden history of deafness in her family, going back generations to the Jewish enclaves of Eastern Europe. Traveling back in time in her mind, she imagined her silent relatives, who showed surprising creativity in dealing with a world that preferred to ignore them.   Here, in a “gentle meditation on sound and silence, love and family” Rosner shares her journey into the modern world of deafness, and the controversial decisions she and her husband made about hearing aids, cochlear implants and sign language (Publishers Weekly).   Punctuated by memories of being unheard, Rosner’s imaginative odyssey of dealing with her daughters’ deafness is at its heart a story of whether she—a mother with perfect hearing—can ever truly hear her children.

The Lives of the Queens of England is a multi-volumed work attributed to Agnes Strickland, though it was mostly researched and written by her sister Elisabeth. These volumes give biographies of the queens of England from the Norman Conquest in 1066. Although by today's standards, it is not seen as a very scholarly work, the Stricklands used many sources that had not been used before.Volume six includes the biography of Elizabeth I through the year 1586.(Introduction by Ann Boulais)
