Synopsis

In "John Corwell, Sailor And Miner; and, Poisonous Fish," Louis Becke weaves a rich narrative tapestry that explores the multifaceted life of John Corwell, illustrating the challenging intersections of seafaring and mining during the late 19th century. Becke's literary style is characterized by vivid imagery and immersive descriptions that bring to life the harsh realities of maritime adventure and the perilous nature of mining. The book also reflects the social and economic complexities of the era, encapsulating a world where ambition clashes with nature's fury. Becke's keen observational skills are apparent in his heartfelt depictions of the maritime landscape and the treacherous allure of the sea, enhanced by undertones of adventure and survival. Louis Becke, an Australian author, had his roots steeped in the very worlds he portrays, having spent considerable time as a sailor in the Pacific Islands. His experiences influenced his understanding of life at sea and the trials faced by those who seek fortune through the unyielding elements. This personal background informs his narratives, imbuing them with authenticity and a deep appreciation for the lifestyles of sailors and miners alike. I highly recommend "John Corwell, Sailor And Miner; and, Poisonous Fish" to readers interested in maritime literature, historical fiction, and tales filled with resilience. Becke's intricate storytelling invites you into an adventure that challenges the human spirit, making it a compelling read for anyone fascinated by the lives of those who tread the precarious edge between hope and danger.

Authors are authors and we are drawn to their works because of their style, their narrative, and their characters and how each part is assembled into the arc of the whole.

But are we? Do social conventions, or fashion or other influences decide what we read or what we listen to?

Its famously said that everyone has a story, everyone should be heard.

So, when we discover a particular author has a dark past, a difficult character, what do we do?

Europe was in the last century riven by two catastrophic world wars and a myriad of other local ones. And like good citizens everywhere our thoughts are stilled by the word ‘Fascist’. This word which originally meant many strands held together to make a stronger whole is now a one word response to evil and work done in its name.

In this volume our approach has been to take authors of then great renown, two of whom won the Nobel Prize, and compile a work from each which is seen in a literary context rather than in the heinous shadow of their political and social beliefs.

We are taught that authors write of their own experiences, but is that really true? Can an author be separated from their nihilistic approach to politics and actually be a good writer who adds to our knowledge and experience rather than taint us with their reprehensible beliefs on their fellow man.

Its an ongoing argument. Perhaps both sides are right. Perhaps both sides are wrong.

The Attack on the Mill is a powerful tale of love, loyalty, and devastation set against the backdrop of the Franco-Prussian War. On the eve of a joyous wedding at Father Merlier's idyllic mill in the Lorraine countryside, the drums of war grow louder. As Prussian forces descend upon the village of Rocreuse, peace is shattered in a single day. What begins as a celebration quickly becomes a siege, and young lovers Françoise and Dominique are thrust into a fight for survival, honor, and one another.
With vivid natural imagery and emotional depth, Émile Zola paints a haunting picture of the personal cost of war. This tragic novella is brought to life by the rich, immersive narration of Etombè Edembe, capturing both the pastoral beauty and the horrifying intensity of a nation torn apart.
Perfect for fans of classic European literature, war stories, and emotional dramas.

Imagine living in a world where every facet of your existence is beyond your control.
Imagine living in a world where your God-given physical traits are resented and reviled.
Imagine living in a world where your humanity is subject to judicial and legal debate.
Imagine living in a world where the government of the people, by the people, and for the people is explicit and implicit in denying you the most basic of human rights - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
For James Scott, this isn’t imagination, but a horrifically callous reality. Despite the odds stacked against him, despite the laws that hindered his future, despite the obstacles that challenged his resolve, this African American not only survived, but thrived during his journey through 19th century America.
A Journey Far: Ibere (Beginnings) starts with James being sold into bondage before his 6th birthday in the 1840s antebellum South and ends in 1860s New York City as the Confederate attack on Ft. Sumter, South Carolina precipitates the U. S. Civil War.
In this work of Historical Fiction - an epic along the lines of Alex Haley’s, Roots - James reacts to and interacts with historical people and events, a dramatic analogy to the movie, Forest Gump. James’ journey takes him far from his brutal beginnings, through a life of malicious prejudice, and toward a future rife with hopes of freedom, promises of equality, and revelations of self.
