  South Park was developed from two animated short films titled The Spirit of Christmas, released in 1992 and 1995. The second short became one of the first viral internet videos, which led to the series' production. 
    
  The pilot episode of South Park was produced using cutout animation, but the rest of the series uses computer animation that resembles the cutout technique. This method allows for faster production times than traditional hand-drawn animation. 
    
  Since the fourth season, episodes have generally been written and produced during the week before their broadcast. Trey Parker serves as the lead writer and director. 
    
  South Park debuted on August 13, 1997, and has broadcast 328 episodes. It consistently earned the highest ratings of any basic cable program during its early years.
